php and gd i would imagine
php can tell you your IP with a variable somewhere ($_SERVER[REMOTE_ADDR] i think) and your browser sends it's type, version and operating system when it requests data (image, page etc). combine that info with gd to turn it into an image and you get the finished result

oh, and the 3rd line is done by randomly selecting an element from an array.

as for how the extension is .jpg not .php, that's slightly tougher but still possible (i've done it before to use a php file as an avatar). a bit of .htaccess to tell apache to parse jpg files with PHP..

A javascript can also tell you what your IP address is and information such as your host information etc.

One I played around with a while back shows your IP for example.

Gamma? I've heard of software being in Alpha and Beta before, but not Gamma... or are you just trying to show off your knowledge of the EM Spectrum? Wink

Gamma means it's live.

Hence being uploaded to a live server.

Alpha, Beta, Gamma etc are letters in the greek alphabet aren't they?

And do you realise that your javascript for displaying your IP is actually done with SSI? the only thing JS is doing is alerting it...
I downloaded a similar one from JavascriptKit or DynamicDrive a while ago before I discovered the joys of PHP Smiley

Yes I know it uses SSI,
I had to make the necessary changes in my .htaccess files to get it to run.

I could use PHP but then I would have to host it on the CGI server and wouldn't get FTP access when I'm not dialled into PlusNet and javascripts generally do whatever I need.

Yes the testing methodology comes from the Greek alphabet rather than the spectrum (which in turn takes it from the alphabet).

Gill, you are correct in your assumption. They are indeed the letters of the Greek alphabet. Award yourself 10 brownie points and a Blue Peter badge.
