Constantly losing connection!

Hi,
Ever since I upgraded to “Broadband Plus - Up to 4Mb” I’ve been frequently disconnected. For instance, in the past hour I’ve lost connection about 12 times, yesterday wasn’t much better either. Now from the time when I upgraded it’s been common for me to lose connection a few times around the hours of 14:00 to 22:00 during the week and the problem seems to be getting a lot worse.

Is it a common problem due to BT upgrading lines around the area or something else? Please help! :?

Thanks,
Rob

Disconnections

Hello Rob,

Yes! of course there remains the possibility that the problem is BT related, but I just had my service upgraded to BB premium 2MB's and my connection remains as stable as it was previously.

OK! there are a couple of things I'd like to suggest you do. 1) Contact force9 support (either open a new support ticket or phone them up Tel 0845-142-5000) and ask them to test you line bye running a whoosh test for you. This will help determine the line quality.

2) Also after a regrade you may notice that your line says its connecting at the newer speed but if you run a speed test such as DSLreports speed test tool it may look like your still on your old service. a) you have to reboot your system after the upgrade has taken place and b) you have to contact F9 to have them change the speed at their end, something to do with throttling or un-throttling your service so you get the full new speed

3) If your still having problems ask F9 to raise this problem as an issue with BT and again get them to test your line for noise levels, have them balance your line and adjust the "gain" if required. It used to be possible 18mths ago to contact BT directly but the moment they know your ISP is F9 and not BT then they wont play ball any more sadly. Even if your phone line & voice service is with BT the engineers wont run tests for customers of other non BT ISP's.

4) if in doubt physically disconnect your router or modem for 1 hour this helps by forcing the Line Card at the BT exchange to be re-set and bye doing this you will get a fresh / new ADSL session.

5) You could as a final last resort un-install your modem/router and re-install it from scratch sometimes this actually works but it is a pain to have to go too all that trouble. (but only if non of the above mentioned doesnt sort things out).

PS: You WONT be on 4MB's as its not availble yet as far as I am aware, you'll probably be on 1MB or 2MB's. 4MB's will only be available later in the year after BT complete its trials of the technology MaxDSL around about Sept Oct 2005.

Thank you for the quick reply cyteck! I’ll investigate the issue first thing in the morning, following your guidelines. Smiley

Constantly losing connection!

Well having thought the problem fixed itself with only one witnessed disconnection and f9 telling me there is no apparent problem with my line. Today I’ve had an abundance of disconnections. Multiple times around 1pm and then 4 disconnections from the time of 5:50pm to 7:25. Now it could be my hardware but as I stated, I’ve had zero problems with it and f9 in the past.

Here is the system log from my router (zoom v5) if that could be any help to someone of knowledge about this type of thing.

Error Log,Ivan

Hello Again,

OK from your posted error logs I'd like to suggest that this problem is DNS related, clearly the lost connections are to do with your router loosing contact with the F9 primary DNS & secondary DNS servers. This is screeming out of the log shown. Obviously your router requires contact with these DNS servers otherwise you DONT have name resolution services hence no surfing websites, no email,no FTP, no IRC, etc, etc, etc.

I'd open a CS ticket and re-post a copy of this log to technical support and ask them for some comments or feedback.

**Primary DNS = 212.159.6.9
**Sec DNS = 212.159.6.10

Just 'cos the logs show hundreds of DNS connection problems don't mean noth.... oh....... er.......

yeah, you might have spotted a theme.

Cheesy Cheesy

On a (hopefuly) more helpfull note, I've had a few issues with DNS fowarding just failing now and again on a wide range of kit. I suspect that this is due to the tightening of standards by ISP's as DNS forwarding has been abused, and loose implementation of the protocols in end user kit.

Try just putting the f9 DNS addresses into you network connection control panel. This should override the router. You should then check the settings in your router and stop it caneing their DNS servers Wink

Router & DNS problems & dropped lines

Hi mattley,

Error messages are useful in my experience as they do attempt to try & tell you something about the nature of the probem. Yes! some error messages are so obscure as to be meaningless but in this case I stick by what I just said to you I still think this is a DNS related problem with your router & its configuration.

OK lets try another tack, does your router auto detect your network settings or do you configure the router manually (i.e. input the various IP address, etc)??

** Have you asked F9 to run a woosh test on your phone line to check for noise levels, line attenuation, SNR, line balance, current gain settings, etc If you havent it might be helpful in terms of trouble shooting and atleast if things report as OK then you can eliminate the phone line from the possible causes.

So DONT you think your own words are significant in realtion to this problem, dont you think there might be the tiniest possibility that this is a DNS related issue?Huh

**Your router is currently pingable from my machine:-23:22pm

Ivan, I think you might have missed the smilies. Cheesy

You were without doubt spot on hence my post advising bypassing the router.

I'm very deadpan IRL and sometimes forget that a shrug or a grin doesn't always work on forums.
