Came across a decent site listing all the "anti spyware" products that are probably worse for your computer than having the spyware there in the first place.

Thought some of you would like to see it and check it out against your own protection.

Hi Platty,

Gosh!! thats quite a long listing of suspect packages, interesting Spyware Blaster is included on the list too. I installed it a few years ago and it just doesnt live upto the makers claims, infact my homepage was hijacked with the program installed (which it says it can prevent?).

**The moral of my experience with spyware blaster is that the user can be VERY easily lulled into a false sense of security with such a program installed.

**I shared my experience over in the force9 forums and a couple of people got quite upset with me, saying I was wrong & its a good program which wasnt my experience.

**Also if its freeware then user beware, any free program needs to be tested and used for a period of time before you committ to using it for the longer term IMO.

The general consensus of opinion on the anti-spyware newsgroups is to use 'Adaware', 'Spybot Search & Destroy' and 'Microsoft Anti Spyware' together. This should eliminate 95% of known spyware.
Some people recommend using a modified Hosts file and a programme called 'CW Shredder' gets consistantly good reviews. If all else fails use 'Hijack This' and post the resulting log file on one of the many specialist forums - an expert will help you to remove the infection.
I would be very warey of using any other programmes than those mentioned above ... and all of them are freeware.

Hi again,

Yes! Lavasofts AdAware SE is excellent and have been using it now for ages and performes consistenly well, I know Spybot Search & Destroy is also highly rated too. I'm less sure about Microsofts anti spyware program as it was a late commer to the party as it were and I didnt want yet another piece of MS software on my machine. Plus IMO alot of the OS add on's havent been upto much for example the winXP firewall. No! I tend to think other companies do these specialised tools better than MS.

Hello Ivan

9 times out of 10 I would agree with you about keeping MS applications off my PC.

However I've made an exception in this case. Microsoft Anti Spyware is a "bought in" application - not developed by MS but currently in beta with a view to incorporating it in the next release of Windows. One thing that it does do which the others don't is to provide real-time anti spyware scanning - in much the same way as your Anti Virus program works.

I had to install it on a few machines at work (spent many happy hours clearing spyware off works PC's) and have to say that I've been more than impressed by the results so far. I still do the odd scans with Spybot and Adaware but find less and less spyware all the time. I suppose if you think about it, this is the only anti spyware app that has access to the source code of the operating system - so in this respect it has a head start on the others.

Blimey - this has got to be the first time I've defended MS about anything !!!

Are you sure your NOT slipping mate?? tutt tutt!!

**No! but seriously your comments are interesting about the MS anti spyware product.

**TBH I'm far more concerned about Trojens and backdoor attacks & keyloggers and password crackers than spyware or adware, etc. I still havent made up my mind as to which anti trojen scanner to go with but trojen hunter still remains top of my listing so far.

Trojan Hunter is a good one and Ewido security suite is also a great Trojan/adware/spyware alternative.

Just a warning to those that don't know, most anti virus software doesn't scan for these unless they are what are considered harmful, now my idea of harmful is different to norton/mcafee etc so please get the software to protect yourself.

Just beware there are a lot of websites claiming to help but most don't, if your unsure ask and i'm confident that someone on this board if not others will help.
