Additional DNS Records Question

I would like xxx.mydomain.co.uk to work as well as www.mydomain.co.uk. I believe I can do this by adding additional DNS records, but I'm not sure whether I need to add an A record or a CNAME record, and what exactly I put into the left and right hand fields.
TIA
Phil.

Additional DNS Records Question

OK. Thanks. I read the tutorial, and it basically confirmed that what I had been trying appears to be correct, but it still doesn't work. :-(

I set-up the following additional DNS records for trilogica.com earlier in the week but none of them work:

barmaid cname www.trilogica.com.
test1 cname www.trilogica.com.
test2 cname trilogica.com.
test3 cname www
test4 cname www.philpreen.co.uk.

http://barmaid.trilogica.com/ gives a 404 error.

Additional DNS Records Question

You can't do what you are trying to do, unfortunately. It won't work because the webserver has no idea what to do for barmaid.domain.ext

Additional DNS Records Question

The tutorial that platty referred to seems to suggest that it is possible:

Quote
Pointing a 'sub domain' to another domain name

You could point a sub domain to another domain name if you wish. For instance, if you owned fa55.net and anotherdomain.co.uk you could create something.fa55.net which would simply point to the same place as anotherdomain.co.uk

The tutorial also says
Quote
You CAN NOT use any of Free-Online's domain control systems to simply create 'sub domains' to point to different directories on the homepages server.

Which implies that if you create sub domains, that they will all point to the same folder (which is fine for what I want).

Additional DNS Records Question

"barmaid cname www.trilogica.com. " says "create a CNAME for barmaid which points to the same place as www.tilogica.com" however going to http://barmaid.trilogica.com tells the webserver to load the "VirtualHost" for site barmaid.trilogica.com, which of course they know nothing about.

The tutorial appears to be incorrect, or not clear enough anyway, so I'll see if that can be cahnged.

Additional DNS Records Question

It would be nicer if fol could provide us an option to set-up the virtual host, but I guess it's easier to change the documentation rather than fix the problem. :-(

Thanks for your response anyway
Phil.
