Could there be a faster fixed rate alternative to ADSL Max for Business?

A survey by another ISP of Small Business perceptions into Broadband suggested that a large percent preferred a slower, stable line rather than the constant fluctuation that is ADSL Max. Other surveys seem to state that a large number of the people on ADSL Max actually only get speeds of up to 3/4mb anyway.
Given this outcome, is it possible/practical for there to be a slightly higher speed fixed rate line available ie: 3mb or 4mb speed for those that want a  faster broadband experience but don't want to go for an "up to 8mb" experience and find the line goes all over the place?
What made BT go for 8mb, when the greater number of people would never be able to get this speed?

Hi there,
With regards to the current fixed 2Mbps service, you need to be within about 1.5-2km to be able to receive that service.  If it were possible for BT to offer a fixed 4Mbps service (I don't know of the technical possibilities of this) you would probably have to be with 0.5-1km in order to receive it, which would probably be a waste of their time for minimal return.
I've no idea why they decided on 8Mbps. It's just (I'm guessing here) the maximum speed possible on the existing ADSL technology.

Isn't 8MB the limit on ADSL1?

Yes, I was more umming about why it was 8Mbps rather than not knowing that it was the limitation on the protocol. Smiley

When many of us (lucky ones) can get the full 8MB why set the limit any lower?

Absolutely no reason whatsoever.

The only reason I'm on max is for the extra upload.
If there was a 2Mb / 832k fixed product, I'd absolutely switch to it.
We use VoIP phones with a VoIP PBX hosted externally for our internal / external telephone system so the extra upload allows us to increase the number of channels and concurrent calls we can have at one time.

Liam,
We're offering Max Premium on the sly for an extra £25 per quarter, which you may or may not be interested in?

Re: Could there be a faster fixed rate alternative to ADSL Max for Business?

Nope.
I'm merely saying that it can be done for residential customers, although I appreciate that one of Liam's lines is business.
In which case I'm probably in the wrong forum to be making such comments. Smiley
