Business traffic shaping? (follow-up)

Ref: http://community.plus.net/forum/index.php/topic,60491.msg491733.html#msg491733
Could this be the reason for my recent speed issues?
My current package: PlusNet Small Business Premier up to 8Mb
My speeds used to be great until a couple weeks ago, then dropped significantly, and whilst improving, are still no-where near as good as they used to be.
Due to the site's I run on my network (mainly a personal/analysis site, and a security site (hosts-file.net, and more recently, a site for a friend), my usage between Jan 27th - Feb 26th was 64.53GB.
As an aside, I thought business packages weren't supposed to be capped? (woops, "traffic managed" Wink <--poor attempt at humour btw Wink)

Re: Business traffic shaping? (follow-up)

Hi there,
First, we need to differentiate between traffic prioritisation and traffic shaping.  Traffic shaping is the actually restriction of speeds on certain protocols whereas Traffic prioritisation is the prioritisation of some traffic types over others.
There is no traffic shaping on Business Premier, but there is prioritisation.  Having said that all traffic will be gold or better, barring Usenet and P2P applications, so it shouldn't be a case of our network causing your poor speeds.
Your usage certainly wouldn't see you being restricted.
Have you tried running a BT Speedtest?

Re: Business traffic shaping? (follow-up)

Last speed test I did was around 0849 and it was 3.8MB (still slower than it should be), just did a speed test again specifically in reply to your err, reply, and it seems my speed has dropped yet again;

I've had a thread on my forums since the speed issues started, to catalogue my speed test results;
http://forum.hosts-file.net/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=407
I'd do one at the BT speed test site if the damn thing would load (only ever loads sporadically, otherwise it tends to time out), but I've got a history of my speed tests at speedtest.net if it's required?

Re: Business traffic shaping? (follow-up)

Hi Steven,
The thing about the BT Speedtester is that it shows your sync speeds as well as your IP Profile which can help to identify where the slowdown is actually occurring.

Do you use Firefox? If so try running it in IE.

Re: Business traffic shaping? (follow-up)

IP Profile has always been 6500kbps (never changed on any of the tests I've been able to do there), and sync speed has always remained static at 7616kbps
I'll try running a speed test on the BT one again and post here if it actually works this time Smiley

Never run FireFox as I detest it Wink (Use either Avant Browser, IE or Orca Browser on my Windows system, and Opera on my Linux system)

Re: Business traffic shaping? (follow-up)

It's trying to prove me wrong obviously ..... speedtest.net and the BT speed tester, cannot agree;
Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test:  -provides background information.
    IP profile for your line is - 6500 kbps
    DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM)  7616 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
    Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 5153 kbps
If you wish to discuss these results please contact your ISP.
If you are experiencing problems with specific applications, servers or websites please contact your ISP for assistance.
Your test has completed please close this window to exit the performance tester.

Time to investigate RWIN and MTU tweaking?

Re: Business traffic shaping? (follow-up)

Agreed.
Tweaking Guide.
Higher results on the BT Speedtester than normal testers is normally an indication of poor MTU/rWin values.

I'm not sure I'm 100% confident of speedtest.net results having just obtained:

Have you tried http://www.mybroadbandspeed.co.uk/ ?

Steven, how are you connected to your router - wired or wireless?

Re: Business traffic shaping? (follow-up)

Wired .......... (almost all machines on the network are, besides 3 of them (2 brothers, and my stepdads)
Just reset the RWIN and MTU settings and did another speed test ........

Whether or not this is a coincidence is open for debate as all I've done is reset the settings to what they were and re-booted (I'd already checked those after the problem first started) ..... got the other site you mentioned loading on my alternate machine, and will post those results once it's finished.

Re: Business traffic shaping? (follow-up)

Not sure I trust that site .......

Then 60 seconds later;

First was on my alternate machine, second on my laptop (config's are virtually identical) ...... one of them is lying Wink

Re: Business traffic shaping? (follow-up)

I'd be almost certain that the MTU/rWin changes you have made will have fixed your problem.
The higher results on the BT Speedtest earlier is generally a bit of a giveaway.

I'll do more later on and judge on that (as I said, I didn't change them - just reset them (deleted > re-entered))
