Is the slow link due to congestion at the local exchange or what
Thanks for any comments.
About 8 weeks ago I had Openreach in to resolve a line problem, faulty connection at the top of a pole. judging by my line stats I still have a good line.

Re: yet another speed query

Hi there,
That's a pretty high SNR margin, but shouldn't be the cause of your problem based on your synchronisation rate.
It's also not profile related, as this is still set to 5000Kbps at both our and BTs end.
Rather than using the oh ever so reliable PN speed test, can you try using http://www.mybroadbandspeed.co.uk instead?

Re: yet another speed query

Thanks.
Again, fluctuations could indicate a rather busy exchange.
http://www.plus.net/support/broadband/troubleshooting/rwin_video.shtml
The above link shows you how to tweak your MTU and rWin settings, which again could help to eliminate the problem.  I'm afraid in situations like these, it's very much a trial and error process.

Re: yet another speed query

You should still be able to change your MTU on both your router and Apple.  I'd recommend going with 1430.
Let me try and find a link that shows how to do it on the Apple.

Hi
Had similar problem was only getting an IP throughput speed of 20 kbps. I raised a ticket about it and the plus net tech boys checked with the BT exchange and agreed there was a fault. they arranged with BT to update, but said I had to leave my broadband modem and connection on for between 48 and 72 hours. I did this but after 20 hours I was informed that the speed was now OK and the throughput had increased to 2752 kbps. The last check showed 5220kbps

Re: yet another speed query

Bonnie - Thanks
James
During August this year I was getting very fast connections

This was with an untuned MTU value.
I would have expected that the broadband usage during the day in August would have been greater during the day than now  because of the school holidays.
Are domestic users in contention with business users?

Is there a way of determining if the exchange is getting busy (Horndean) and a way of getting BT to increase capacity?

Re: yet another speed query

The UserGroup Exchange checker (here) shows the exchange is "green" (no known capacity problems).

Re: yet another speed query

Thanks for pointing to that web site - I had remembered Samknows but it no longer shows status.
