wireless router keeps dropping signal...help please!

Hi
I am new to this wireless malarky and now wish I'd stayed wired lol!
Recieved a wireless router from PlusNet in Nov and the signal keeps dropping even when you are only sitting two feet away....help!
Have changed the frequency of the router to see if this helps but no improvement...
Is it just a cheap and nasty free router and I need to invest in a better quality one or is there something else I can do to improve this as it's driving me potty as I'm having to use the ethernet cable constantly to ensure continuation of connection....as I said...should've stayed wired!!
ARGGGGHHHHH!!!
All help / hints / tips etc very gratefully welcome but please use simple terminology as I can't speak IT fluently...
Thank you all in advance...

Re: wireless router keeps dropping signal...help please!

Hi, just reread your post.
can you see what router you have, because the thomson has 2 models and the latest one has new firmware to help with a connection problem.
I don't know how to add the link ,but i am sure someone more knowledgable will be able to provide it.
Also, they will advise as to whether this is or could be the cause of your problems.

Re: wireless router keeps dropping signal...help please!

Hi Joanne
Yes it was - from the library - in fact it has made the dropping signal problem significantly worse - especially the closer you sit to the router!!
Previously it was better when I sat closer to it (but still dropped) and worse in a different room.
Now it is better further away and absolutely diabolical when sat 2 feet away from the router..
Please can you help ?Huh
We don't have a test socket as we are in an old property.
Thanks.
