wireless connection...or lack of it!

I was recommended plusnet by a friend and went for it...all was well until I tried to log in in another room in the house away from the router...no joy..then I started to not be able to log in using wireless in the same room as the router..  I could only get an internet connection when attching my lap top to the router using the ethernet cable...
After contacting Plusnet they said they would send me a new router...which after having to prompt them after waiting for a fortnight ..they did.
I set it up and had wireless again in the same room as the router ...but whenever I move the laptop to another room I can't log on...it's so frustrating...if I walk with the laptop a few feet towards the router then refresh the available networks..plusnet appears and then I am able to log on in the other room!!
Has anyone had this happen to them and/or any ideas what to do other than scream!!

Have you tried using different channel numbers?

Re: wireless connection...or lack of it!

I am not very 'computer' minded so asking me if I've changed channels means nothing to me...how do I do that and I'll try it!!

If you post saying which router you have someone will give you the instructions for your router.

Re: wireless connection...or lack of it!

I haven't got one of those myself, but via Google I found the manual and in it found the attached. I suggest you try the lowest, highest and one in the middle to see if one works better. (Have you got cordless phones? If so make sure that isn't clashing)
Hope that helps.

Re: wireless connection...or lack of it!

Thanks for that...I've changed the channel number and will see how it goes.
I do have cordless phones...what should I check out with those?

Re: wireless connection...or lack of it!

If your phone is a 2.4ghz version then you need to make sure it's not using the same channel number as your router, but it could be that you are using the same channel as a neighbours router/phone which would explain the problems you experience when you move the laptop further away. Experimenting with changing which channel you use on the router may solve the problem.
There are cordless phones that run on frequencies other than 2.4ghz and they won't cause a problem.

Re: wireless connection...or lack of it!

Thanks for the info...I've been able to log in from the 'other' room --brilliant!!! If I'd known it was that easy I'd have done it ages ago...what puzzles me is...why didn't the customer support at plusnet suggest changing channel numbers before sending me a replacement router!!!....anyway..hopefully problem solved so once again many thanks!!

Re: wireless connection...or lack of it!

Glad it's sorted Smiley I'm surprised that wasn't suggested by the CSC to be honest.
