I believe that the router doesn't show the connection status as in the fibre part because that information is held by the modem but it will show if you are connected to the internet

The screenshot above is not Plusnet Router. I believe this is Netgear because it does look like Netgear layout. I think Plusnet supply Technicolor 582n router (not sure what version is that) probably v3, if the wireless is poor then surely plusnet should have this one instead: http://www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk/products/16234-thomson-tg589vn/

You are wrong!
It's was supplied by Plusnet and has been working very nicely for the last 2 years.
None of this Technicolor or Thomson rubbish.
I rather like Netgear routers...

They don't supply the Netgear routers any more - I think they were originally supplied when FTTC was in the trial stage, but now you get the Thompson router, with only 3 LAN ports, as one of the 4 is remapped to be the WAN port for connecting to the VDSL modem.
Depending on the modem you have, one of the 2 types OR supply (HG612) can be easily unlocked and can provide stats, something like the attached, courtesy of HG612 Modem logs stats viewer & settings editor V2.1, which logs all sorts of useful info to and by a suite of software. See here:
