what its acceptable keep line active traffic on unused fttc line

What are the roughly expected figures of usage while a router is left home alone.
I am seeing figures of about 20 - 30 MB per day.
Was expecting less than 1mb per day out there abouts.
I can be glad it's not anything drastic to suggest I have been hijacked just curious as to expected keep line alive traffic.

Do you have any ping test / TBB graphs set up ? These can account for a few MB a day.

That's about right really. 20-30MB isn't a size that I'd be too worried about and would be around the amount I'd expect.

What is the reasoning / processes that causes the 20 - 30 MB Per day when on standby ?Huh

It's just background traffic and packets that we send to the router, could even be firmware updates or something similar.

Not without sitting and watching each packet of traffic, no.
Some of this will be keep alive traffic, some could be port scans, some could be old connections for P2P or similar that are trying to connect.

Re: what its acceptable keep line active traffic on unused fttc line

30MB a DAY over a month is around 900MB per month.
clearly that level of monthly bandwidth is concerning.

Exactly
No wonder some customer(s) will / would of gone beyond their monthly limits
That is why we should know what PN sends / receives on a daily basis & how much
I understand in some cases it will be some foreigner in some foreign country trying to get past the firewall
Or
Your local geek looking for free internet

Re: what its acceptable keep line active traffic on unused fttc line

Sorry, you seem to be misunderstanding. We don't specifically send traffic at customers connections, the majority of that usage is unlikely to just be keep alive traffic as it sounds more than I'd expect, but not outside the realms of possibility either http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keepalive
It could be so many things that we can't identify it without checking every packet in and out, and we're simply not going to do that.
If you're concerned about using this usage, log in to your router and disconnect if you're not going to be using it for a while. Or try turning our broadband firewall on.

it's just when you said it sounded normal and nothing to be worried about.
also, not sure how turning the broadband firewall on would help as the traffic still would hit your account, it just wouldn't reach its intended target?

IIRC the point at where our broadband firewall sits on the network means that it can help reduce this background traffic.

I'll turn on the pn firewall and see what happens. I trust the pn firewall will not affect my speed?

Not able to do that as I don't have arms long enough to reach from where I am sitting in the sun
