streaming problems

Believe it or not, the small amount packet loss i suffered earlier at about 20:40 was enough to freeze my bbc stream which just locked up my ps3. Do roku3 boxs suffer like this? I just cant cope with this anymore with my current equipment Sad

Re: streaming problems

You got a thinkbb graph?  Are you seeing consistent loss? Or just a spike?

Was just going to ask the same as Kelly.
I've checked your line and can't spot anything obvious a TBB Graph would be great.

I'm half expecting to see packet loss pattern like this graph...

I've dropped a graph above, I wasn't quite sure if it was just a one off spike last night or not, but looking at the full hours on the sam graph today tells me it was a more sustained loss i had last evening.

Re: streaming problems

Quite often my Samknows results for packet loss doesn't match my TBB BQM.
My iPlayer traffic is being hosted by Akamai (outside the UK) and routed by Telia - 213-248-111-172.customer.teliacarrier.com
Next time it happens, my be worth looking at which CDN is being used and doing some pings.

Re: streaming problems

I didn't start the graph till 10am on the 9th AndyH, sorry about the confusion, my problems have been running for a few days prior as well as a few times over the last few weeks which seemed to subside when i changed my dns settings over to OpenDns, However... I had some packet loss on the evening off the 8th as follows which may of caused my streams to freeze. But nothing since, I was streaming late afternoon and all last evening with no problems. So i guess we wait till sunday/monday evening when it's at full tilt plunet's side.

I'll have a mooch at that side of things next time it happens, I thought it was down to plusnet to be looking after this sort of stuff for us! No?

Re: streaming problems

What IP address you get for a CDN server can depend on which DNS servers you're using, although last time I checked Plusnet DNS and OpenDNS were giving the same results. I see that the range of IP addresses you get for akamai hosted websites seems to have changed on PCL gateways, e.g.
[tt]traceroute to www.metoffice.gov.uk (212.56.73.144), 30 hops max, 60 byte packets
1  192.168.0.1 (192.168.0.1)  1.357 ms
2  lo0-central10.pcl-ag07.plus.net (195.166.128.188)  48.380 ms
3  link-a-central10.pcl-gw01.plus.net (212.159.2.184)  21.223 ms
4  xe-9-0-0.pcl-cr01.plus.net (212.159.0.216)  20.387 ms
5  cache.akamai.com (212.56.73.144)  20.483 ms[/tt]
(On a PTN gateway it seems www.metoffice.gov.uk still resolves to 23.62.53.115 or a similar IP.)
[tt]traceroute to cp41752.edgefcs.net (213.248.111.84), 30 hops max, 60 byte packets
1  192.168.0.1 (192.168.0.1)  1.360 ms

4  xe-9-0-0.pcl-cr01.plus.net (212.159.0.216)  20.073 ms
5  xe-11-1-0.edge3.London2.Level3.net (212.187.201.209)  20.653 ms
6  vl-3201-ve-128.ebr2.London2.Level3.net (4.69.202.177)  27.380 ms
7  ae-43-43.ebr1.Paris1.Level3.net (4.69.159.90)  27.345 ms
8  ae-71-71.csw2.Paris1.Level3.net (4.69.161.82)  27.711 ms
9  ae-2-70.edge3.Paris1.Level3.net (4.69.168.70)  27.990 ms
10  telia-level3.paris1.Level3.net (4.68.62.250)  28.255 ms
11  prs-bb2-link.telia.net (213.155.132.198)  29.662 ms
12  prs-b8-link.telia.net (213.155.131.11)  29.575 ms
13  213-248-111-84.customer.teliacarrier.com (213.248.111.84)  29.369 ms[/tt]
So there's still a short route for akamai web content, but a longer route for streaming.

Re: streaming problems

I've been trying to find some sites that represent UK internet traffic so you can see what is a busy night, but none of the peers seem to publish this.
The only thing I came up with (apart from the PN graphs) were the free peering exchanges - http://www.lonap.net/mrtg/lonap-total.html and https://www.linx.net/pubtools/trafficstats.html?stats=day
I'm not sure how representative they are of ISP end user traffic, but I suppose they must be a bit of a guide.
