speed query

Hi,
I'm a new plusnet user and I'm on Plusnet Value (up to 10 GB). I've done a few speed checks and the most I get is about 1855 kbps download speed.
We recently had a problem with our phone, and when the BT engineer came to sort it out he told me we are about 200-400 yards from our exchange so should be getting at least 4 GB download speeds.
My question is why is my connection speed so low when I'm relatively near my exchange????Huh

Re: speed query

Can you try another speed test now? Our system hadn't updated and had you on a fixed 2Mb speed so I've altered that to match the profile of your line (5500).

Re: speed query

Glad I posted my query now!
Just did a few tests and came back A LOT faster.
BBC website: between 4000 to 4423 kbps (ping 56 whatever that means)
speetest.net: 4.7mbps
broadbandspeedchecker.co.uk: weirdly said 2.8mbps (I assume this one isn't reliable).
All same with about  0.36 upload speed.
Can I take it that my download speed is now about 4 mbps+ and will stay like this on my new altered profile?
Many thanks for your quick reply and sorting out of the situation. I am increasingly impressed with your customer service on this forum, thanks again Chris. Smiley

Re: speed query

Forgot to mention, on the BBC speed diagnostic it also said the following:
Download Speed: 4008 kbps
Streaming Speed: 2209kbps
Then states my connection 2286kbps
I'm not quite understanding the difference between the download speed, the streaming speed, and the number it states is my connection speed? If possible could youexplain to a tech dunce? I'm assuming the speed tests I've done show my download speed to be at least 4Mb now.....sorry, easily confused with these terms and numbers!

Re: speed query

at that distance from the exchange I would  think you should get a lot higher speed.
1) how long have you been on
2) check this http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/adslchecker.php
3) what are your router stats http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/frogstats.php
4) do a speed test with this http://www.mybroadbandspeed.co.uk/
5) do a BT speed test http://www.speedtester.bt.com/  this will give your Synchronisation and profile speed, the download speed given is flaky.  The entry for user name is the same as that put into the router username@plusnet  not your e-mail
from this book load a few experts can then advise you more

Re: speed query

Ok, here goes,
Mybroadbandspeed.com results:
4356 kbps download speed
374 kbps upload speed
BT Speedtester results:
Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test:
    Your DSL connection rate: 6720 kbps(DOWN-STREAM),  448 kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP profile for your line is - 5500 kbps
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 935 kbps
Kitz.co.uk:
I'm 161 metres from exchange. (I think I'm a bit closer as on their map the exchange is slightly in the wrong place).
ASDL enabled: Jan 2004
DSL Max enabled: March 2006
Broadband Access: Market 1
BT Line Speed Estimation:
Fixed ADSL:  2048 kbps (2 Mb)
DSL Max :  5000 kbps (5 Mb)
My Router stats:
Thomson TG585 v7
DSL Type: G.992.1 annex A

Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 448 / 6,720
OK, I think that covers evrything....Idon't know if that helps or what most of it means!

Re: speed query

Basically the change that Chris made in the first reply has fixed the problem.
Now to see if you can squeeze a bit more speed we need the stats from your router - noise margin, attenuation and speeds although we already have the speeds from the BT test if they haven't changed.
I think this link will take you straight to the page on your router http://192.168.1.254/cgi/b/dsl/dt/?ce=1&be=0&l0=1&l1=0

Re: speed query

This is everything that is on the page from the link:
Uptime: 0 days, 3:43:35

DSL Type: G.992.1 annex A

Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 448 / 6,720

Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [kB/kB]: 0.00 / 0.00

Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 12.0 / 11.5

Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 4.0 / 7.0

SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 24.0 / 15.5

Vendor ID (Local/Remote): TMMB / TSTC

Loss of Framing (Local/Remote): 0 / 0

Loss of Signal (Local/Remote): 0 / 0

Loss of Power (Local/Remote): 0 / 0

Loss of Link (Remote): 0

Error Seconds (Local/Remote): 0 / 0

FEC Errors (Up/Down): 0 / 0

CRC Errors (Up/Down): 0 / 0

HEC Errors (Up/Down): 0 / 0

I have to say, I'm really impressed by all the help offered here from Plusnet staff to forum bods. I've already noticed a difference to my broadband speed since Chris altered my broadband profile. It's a lot faster than my previous ISP.

Re: speed query

Attenuation of 7? That's extremely good, as long as your line stays stable you'll see that the SNR should reduce and in turn the speed you are connected at (downstream) should increase. I'd expect you to get the full 8128 sync speed which should mean higher speeds than you're currently seeing.

Re: speed query

So I don't need to do anything then...just sit back and wait over the coming days/weeks?

Re: speed query

start moving hopefully within 3 days, normally up to 10 days.  I live further than you from exchange and get 8128, profile 7150

Re: speed query

Hi,
It's been a couple of weeks since I posted this query and I've since done some more speed tests today to see if my speed has increased....it doesn't appear to have done.
From mybroadbandspeed.co.uk the results similar to before at 4656kbps download, 348kbps upload.
My router stats haven't changed, this is the latest:
Uptime: 0 days, 0:37:43
DSL Type: G.992.1 annex A
Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 448 / 6,752
Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [kB/kB]: 0.00 / 0.00
Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 12.0 / 11.5
Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 4.0 / 7.0
SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 23.0 / 15.0
Vendor ID (Local/Remote): TMMB / TSTC
Loss of Framing (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
Loss of Signal (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
Loss of Power (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
Loss of Link (Remote): 0
Error Seconds (Local/Remote): 0 / 0
FEC Errors (Up/Down): 0 / 0
CRC Errors (Up/Down): 0 / 0
HEC Errors (Up/Down): 0 / 0
It was mentioned that I should see a rise in my speed after about 10 days. I was just wondering if my line speed is going to stay around the level I get now, or should it have increased a bit more by now? It's still a lot faster than I was getting!
