slow speeds - sometimes loss of connection

Have been getting slow speeds for a while, and a few days ago was having trouble connecting altogether - adsl light on my netgear router falshing orange.... Tried BT's line checker and reported nothing wrong with line.
Ran BT speed test and got following:
Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
Your DSL connection rate: 160 kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 288 kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP profile for your line is - 135 kbps
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 98 kbps
Supposed to be on speeds up to 8Mb?! I am still with original pay as go metronet package...
I have put a ticket in for this - no reply yet though...
Ticket number: 27728763
Thanks,
Steve.

Re: slow speeds - sometimes loss of connection

Have you tried with the router connected to the BT Test Socket?
And do you have more detailed stats from the router, showing noise margins etc.?

Re: slow speeds - sometimes loss of connection

Ok, after various tests ran by metronet support it seems the problem is an internal wiring issue as opposed to the line.
After reading James' slow speed quide, I have a few questions.
Recently I connected a phone to the main socket without a dsl filter, and still have our router connected to the other socket with a filter (used to have phone connected to this too).
So, I'm thinking this could be the issue, giving bad interference so bad adsl speeds - and BT have reset IP profile lower to 135kbps.
I have now added a filter to the main socket with just the phone connected - if as I hope this decreases and cross interference problems - will my IP profile, in time, get set higher again by BT? How long doe they usually reset these IP profiles?
Thanks.

Re: slow speeds - sometimes loss of connection

Hi,
A filter only filters the phone connection not the internet connection - that is essentially a pass through so filtering just the router, as you have found, messes things up.
All devices connected to the phone line must be filtered.
In relation to your question about 3 days is  normal although sometimes it is quicker where there has been a big change

Re: slow speeds - sometimes loss of connection

Ok, after 3 days my IP profile has been increased to ~4.5Mbps, but my actual IP download speed is a sorry 9kbps...is this right?
    Your DSL connection rate: 5184 kbps(DOWN-STREAM),  448 kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP profile for your line is - 4500 kbps
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 9 kbps

No, seems very strange.
It certainly is not that slow - a bt speed tester issue I reckon...

Just seen this topic.
Recently I was at my neighbours who had done something similar. I was actually looking at the routers stats when the phone rang. A noise margin of around 18 started leaping around all over the place, went negative and then resynced at a much lower speed.
Warning: Do not experiment to verify my observations unless you want your speeds buggered for the next 3-5 days!

Re: slow speeds - sometimes loss of connection

On the other hand it would confirm you have done something wrong Sad
stevewelling -  doublecheck your profile at the member centre, it should have recovered to the same as the BT one. Also worth checking your exchange status here to see if the VP's are on red.
It's more likely the result was severe contention/drops at the instant the test ran (it was peak times).
