for several years my adsl broadand has always given me 400Kb/sec downloads regardless of provider but lately the most I ever get off plusnet is 240Kb/sec. I heard the message on the plusnet support line about this current 'reduced speed' issue but I want to know - how long is this going to carry on? I'm paying the fee and I want my full broadband back.

Hi there,
How recent is it that this has started? I suspect after checking your account that it's been caused by the network being out of balance following the issues we had on Friday (and also earlier on in the week). If you notice it running slowly again, log in to the router and disconnect via the button on the control panel on the router's page. Once that's done, turn the router off for 5-10 minutes or so then turn it back on (you might also need to go back in to the router's page and tell it to connect, though hopefully that won't be the case).
That should move you onto a different and hopefully less busy gateway with better speeds, if it doesn't I'm afraid you'd need to do the above again.

I've noticed this slowness for a couple of weeks but not certain when it started. I tried another router, it made no difference. I tried what you said, it made no difference. It appears my broadband speed has been almost halved by plusnet with no explanation. Nothing has changed at my end. Can someone at plusnet please look into this?

Hi neuronetv,
I'll be happy to try and help. I've just ran some checks and can't see anything on your line that would be obviously restricting your speed. Are you using a wireless or wired connection. Can you run a BT speed test and post the results? Is it happening at certain times of the day or all the time? The 400Kb and 240Kb are very slow for what I think you should be getting. Where are you getting those speed results from?
Jojo

this morning my speed is back up to 400kb/sec so that's a relief. It's good news but I can't help but be suspicious of plusnet regarding why it went down in the first place. I could tell from the network monitoring software I use that my speed had been 'capped'. This wasn't a technical breakdown or anything like that and nothing has changed at my end. It's as if someone at plusnet had locked my broadband down to 240Kb/sec.

Are you getting those results from a speed test site or from downloads you're using?

It's probably the traffic management on the account causing these speeds, do the speeds on this page look similar to the experience you're seeing? http://www.plus.net/support/broadband/speed_guide/download_speeds.shtml

Just a possibility: download servers, for example on Value (I didn't check all the others) are 2Mbps all evening (6pm to midnight), this is 250MBps (as might be reported by a download dialogue) so 240MBps (rather than 240Mbps) would be very close?
