Re: "Unknown" gateway

Confuzzled.  People seem to recommend rebooting to try to change a gateway.  But doesn't rebooting then have a negative effect on your connection (IP Profile resets etc..) ?Huh

Re: "Unknown" gateway

Not if you do it occasionally, and preferably at a time when the noise is less - i.e about midday.
I did it twice today about 1pm - and my speed is still the same - a solid 6.5M

Re: "Unknown" gateway

You do not necessarily have to switch your router off to change your gateway.    You can do it from your computer via your router's web address, usually starting with http://192.168.
This only disconnects you from Plusnet and NOT BT so will not affect your internet connection.   This is how other more experienced members have explained it to me in the past.

Re: "Unknown" gateway

Aha, so the "reboot" option in my DG834 software won't be recognised by BT.  Hmm, that's useful to know.

Re: "Unknown" gateway

I think you'll find a reboot will be seen as a disconnection by BT because it causes the DG834 to switch off and on again same as if you did it manually, causing an interruption to your connection.
What won't be seen as a disconnection will be using the Set Up Wizard or Set Up and applying your Basic Settings (password and stuff), which may or may not find you reconnecting to a different gateway.

Re: "Unknown" gateway

I have a DG834GT and I thought the following process should find a new gateway :-
1. From the Browser access the Router
2. From the "Router status" page select "Connection" button at the bottom of the page
3. Select "Disconnect"  and wait, then select "connect".
Does that seem right ?

Re: "Unknown" gateway

Oh yes, that will do it too of course (and with less bother!). And you'll be able to choose how long you keep it disconnected from PlusNet that way.

Sorry, I'm on a Mac, don't know how you do a traceroute - or if you can!

Just launch Network Utility from Applications/Utilities.

Tracing route to www-fmt.bbc.net.uk [212.58.244.143]

Just to add a touch of the surreal to this thread - I got the "unknown" gateway on the plus page and when I did a tracert I even got it in there too!
Looks like some wag has set it up in DNS as "unknown" now  Smiley

Re: "Unknown" gateway

Yep, looks like that one has unknown.plus.net configured as it's rDNS:
C:\Documents and Settings\bpullen>nslookup 84.92.4.160
Server:  125.structure.internal.plus.net
Address:  84.93.217.125
Name:    unknown.plus.net
Address:  84.92.4.160

There's still a few that don't have any rDNS though:
Tracing route to mail.plus.net [212.159.8.81]
over a maximum of 30 hops:
 1     1 ms     2 ms     4 ms  gateway.anfield [192.168.1.254]
 2    29 ms    26 ms    29 ms  lo0-homesurf.pcl-ag04.plus.net [195.166.128.135]
 3    27 ms    26 ms    27 ms  84.92.0.236
 4    25 ms    27 ms    27 ms  te2-2.pte-gw1.plus.net [212.159.0.186]
 5    25 ms    25 ms    27 ms  vl22.thn-gw1.plus.net [212.159.4.3]
 6    29 ms    25 ms    26 ms  te3-2.ptn-gw01.plus.net [212.159.1.53]
 7    37 ms    37 ms    38 ms  gi3-0.pih-cr1.plus.net [212.159.1.177]
 8    39 ms    38 ms    37 ms  vlan7.pih-gw3.plus.net [212.159.0.26]
 9    37 ms    39 ms    36 ms  if25.pih-lb04.plus.net [212.159.0.18]
10    37 ms    39 ms    37 ms  mail.plus.net [212.159.8.81]
Trace complete.

This will be sorted once the bulk of the expansion work is complete.

Re: "Unknown" gateway

Just for information. I've changed the gateway checker code this afternoon so that any 'unknown gateway' message should be followed by
"The tool currently could not identify your gateway, it does not mean that anything is wrong".
The gateway will become 'known' as network DNS entries are added, but hope the message provides some reassurance in the meantime.

So, after a slight speed drop tonight, I checked to see which gateway I was connected to....

You are currently connected to the "unknown" gateway.

Bit odd, has anyone else noticed that on this page: http://usertools.plus.net/@gateway/

Yes. I saw the same earlier today (and reported it here somewhere!)
Note that I'm on an ordinary connection, not ADSL2+.

Re: "Unknown" gateway

Afternoon guys,
We created the rDNS entries for the recently installed network kit the other day so I'm kind of hoping this 'unknown gateway' issue is now fixed. Would appreciate it if people could shout up if it's not?
