query re upload speed & why it might have slowed

Hi everyone
This is not a complaint I'm just perplexed as to cause  Smiley
I'm pretty sure my upload speed used to be above 300kbps.  I don't often check speeds because we've so rarely (touch wood) had a problem. But a month or two ago it took ages to upload files to dropbox  and a speedtest showed upload speed was below 100kbps.  On every speed test since then the upload speed has been between 94-146kbps.
It hasn't bothered me because I don't upload very often but I'm intrigued as to why it is so low when the download speeds are consistently in excess of 6500kbps which is adequate for our needs.
Forgot to add Plusnet's line speed:
Estimated line speed:
There's no speed estimate currently held on your account.
Current line speed:
7.15 Mb

Will new filters make a difference?
Thanks for reading.

This is a pure guess but have you tried disabling your anti virus as it might be scanning all the uploaded files

Re: query re upload speed & why it might have slowed

Is there any p2p software running in the background using 200Kbps of your upload bandwidth ?

Thanks for replying
I'll try disabling antivirus next time
I don't think it can be p2p as we don't  use (or know how to use) p2p

Re: query re upload speed & why it might have slowed

What model of router is it? There was a problem with slow uploads over wifi on the 585v8 which was never fixed.
If the 720,889 number of loss of signal errors is accurate, then that's a terribly high number.

Re: query re upload speed & why it might have slowed

@purleigh speedtest.net result:    Ping 51 ms.  Download 6.74 Mbps  Upload  11 Mbps
@ejs  Thanks for the link. I wonder if you have found the cause.  My router is the TG585 v8  firmware version 8.2.7.8

Re: query re upload speed & why it might have slowed

that speedtest result doesn't make sense
regarding the router causing it - can you try wired as that effect was only on wireless

Re: query re upload speed & why it might have slowed

@Oldjim sorry upload should read 0.11 MBps.  I'll try wired & repost results.

Re: query re upload speed & why it might have slowed

Speedtest wired results: Ping 31 Ms Download 6.76 Mbps Upload 0.36 Mbps
Looks like it is the router  Sad  But on the bright side the 300kbps wasn't my imagination  Cheesy
Buy a new router or use the cable when uploading photos? Decisions, decisions.

@ejs thanks again for  the tip off.

Re: query re upload speed & why it might have slowed

You should try different wireless channels (1, 6 and 11 for a start) in case the problem is due to congestion from neighbouring wireless networks, or something else interfering with the wireless signal on your channel.

Re: query re upload speed & why it might have slowed

If you are intending to stay with Plusnet for more than a year and your existing router is more than a year old you can have a TG582n from Plusnet for just the P&P (£5.99).

Re: query re upload speed & why it might have slowed

ejs & jelv Thanks for your advice.
I'll try changing to a different wireless channel tomorrow when I'm feeling more awake Smiley I don't want to break the internet.
If that fails I may ask plusnet for a new router. This one is approx  two years old.

Re: query re upload speed & why it might have slowed

A brief final update.
The slow upload speed does, as ejs's link suggested,  appear to be the router. I  tried different wireless channels yesterday but no improvement. I also installed inSSIDer and there's no cross channel interference from nearby.
Thanks to all who replied and to ejs for leading me to the cause of the problem.  Smiley
