portal estimated line speed

what relevance do the plusnet portal listed speeds have in relation to what you can actually achieve?
is my line capable of anything slightly better?
from https://portal.plus.net/my.html?action=data_transfer_speed
Estimated line speed:
14Mb (This may vary between 8Mb and 18.5Mb) - Checked on 2014-06-02 16:33:20
Current line speed:
12.6 Mb
from http://speedtest.btwholesale.com/
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 4 Mbps-21 Mbps.
IP Profile for your line is - 12.65 Mbps

Re: portal estimated line speed

Your IP Profile is set to 88.2% of your sync speed - which is 12.65Mb (rounded up).
The Plusnet profile is set the same, but rounded down - which is 12.6Mb as per what is displayed above.
You've got a lot of errors on the line, which is why it's connecting at a slightly lower speed than it would in ideal conditions.

Re: portal estimated line speed

right... so i need to investigate those error.
i assume it's the FEC errors ?
what might be the cause of those?
assuming i sort that out, does anything else then need to done to eek it up a little?

Re: portal estimated line speed

Are you plugged into the master socket or an extension?
The first thing I would try is to plug the ADSL modem into the test socket (remove the front plate on the master socket) and compare the stats.

Re: portal estimated line speed

which errors were you talking about?
if it's FEC then reading on kitz
Quote
FEC Errors - Forward Error Correction
Count of errors that have been corrected due to error correction being applied to the line. Error correction is turned on at the same time as Interleaving. Its normal to see FEC errors on an Interleaved line and rather than anything to be too concerned about its more an indication that the Interleaving & Error Correction process is working and doing what it should. - See Error Correction for more information.

i wonder if interleaving is enabled as i some major disconnection issues with my line a few months ago and interleaving was turned on to see if it would help (it didn't), and possibly it has been left on once the issues were resolved?
regardless, i'll check out cabling and other stuff anyway.

Re: portal estimated line speed

Interleaving should come off on its own, as long as your line remains stable.
Your line is syncing less than it should do ideally - but there can be many reasons for this. Checking your internal wiring is the first step as this can be a common cause.

Re: portal estimated line speed

i thought it was syncing at 14,335.
should it be capable of syncing higher ?

Re: portal estimated line speed

Around 17Mb based on your line attenuation.

Re: portal estimated line speed

ah...well from day one when plusnet installed ADSL it's never been higher than 14Mbps.
so i will definitely get investigating.
should i find an internal cabling issue and fix it, should i see an immediate improvement of sync speed?
i'll also do a quiet line test as well.

Re: portal estimated line speed

I think so.
The thing to do is to get the statistics from the master test socket and see if there's any difference.

Re: portal estimated line speed

did the quiet line test connected direct to master socket - no crackle or noise.
next step, check cabling.

Re: portal estimated line speed

Also check the bell wire is not connected - should be just terminals 2/5 with wires.

Re: portal estimated line speed

connected on master socket? or the extension?
the extension is just a 2-wire cable.

Re: portal estimated line speed

Both - just make sure only terminals 2 and 5 on both sockets have wires connected.
If the wiring looks ok, then try connecting your router to the master test socket just to see the difference in line attenuation.

Re: portal estimated line speed

i'm considering ripping it out and re-running the cabling anyway.... it is a bit old.
might upgrade the faceplate on master to a mk2 so i can do away with external filters.
what's the longest acceptable extension run from the data port on mk2?
