once and for all... what are 'ideal' SNR and Attenuation figures?

in a perfect world, what would one expect to see as the "best" SNR and Att figures?

I don't think there's really a quantatative answer to this one.  The lower the attenuation the better and the higher the SNR margin the better.

Re: once and for all... what are 'ideal' SNR and Attenuation figures?

Attenuation is the signal loss mainly due to the distance from the exchange, so if your ADSL modem was in the exchange the attenuation might get close to zero.
For the SNR margin, this will change depending upon your sync speed, so it's only relevant to talk about a perfect SNR margin if you already sync at the maximum possible (8M for ADSL Max, 20MB for ADSL2+). If you are doing that and your SNR margin is greater than around 15 and you never get any errors logged I suppose you could call it perfect.

Re: once and for all... what are 'ideal' SNR and Attenuation figures?

i just want to squeeze every last drop out of my connection and i wanted to know if i needed to do anything about any of my stats:
I live right next door to the exchange and my cables are underground so i thought they would be ok...
Connection Speed  8064 kbps  448 kbps
Line Attenuation         2.0 db         1.5 db
Noise Margin           9.7 db           24.0 db
is there anything i can do to improve my noise margin?

Try connecting to the test socket

and what benefit will you see if you squeeze every last drop?

Is it worth it to increase the Profile from 7000 to 7150kbps?

Re: once and for all... what are 'ideal' SNR and Attenuation figures?

thats the problem. bt speedtest informs me my profile is at 6500.... Why so low?? I've never had stability problems... i cant see why its not at least 7000

No, and why would you?
The noise margin is what it is because you are so close. The signal power is probably reduced anyway due to the very short cable.
ADSL2+ would be good.  Wink

I dream of an IP profile of 6500K.  In fact I would settle for 2000 right now.

How often and at what times do you connect your modem? Connecting during the day time and then staying connected might get you a full speed sync.

Re: once and for all... what are 'ideal' SNR and Attenuation figures?

Is interleaving set on by any chance ? That reduces the maximum synch speed slightly and may explain why you aren't synching at 8128.
