new router, very low speeds :(

Hello
Ok got hold of a zyxel p-660 router and the speed decrease is drastic Sad
on my binatone usb 500 modem I was getting normal 8Mb speeds (between 6 and 7Mbs)
on the zyxel router I cannot get higher than 0.9Mbs Sad
It is the same broadband cable and going through the same filters.
NIC is a nforce network controller
I have tried the lan cable in all 4 ports of the back of the router and still the same low speed.
it is always  the same speed as well, does not get above or below 0.9Mbs
Just wondering if there are any special settings I need for the router to get the correct speeds?
does anyone know if binatone have vista usb drivers (that is the main reason for going for the router, as upgrading pc at the weekend).?
anyone have any advice on how to configure the nforce nic card?
thanks

Re: new router, very low speeds :(

Hi Zippy,
Are you in a position where you could reconnect to the internet for me?  I'd like to run a line test with your router connected to see if I can see any reason why you would be seeing slower speeds.

Re: new router, very low speeds :(

Hello
Not at present I am afraid.
there are a couple of things to try on my nic as well that could be causing the slowdown, might  try that tonight, but will be plugging my usb modem in tonight as need to do something with a fast connection.
also have another router to test with as well.
will update this post hopefully on friday.
thanks

Re: new router, very low speeds :(

It could be that if you have been plugging things in and out a lot it could have fooled BT in to thinking you have a dodgy line and they've set your IP profile way down.
I suggest you run the BT speed check to rule that out.

Re: new router, very low speeds :(

Nope, profile is still showing as being 6500Kbps, so I don't think that the problem is sync/profile related.

MTU on the router set lower than on the PC?

Re: new router, very low speeds :(

Ok have tried another router and exactly the same speed Sad
I am thinking it must be the nic.
mtu on router and nic is set to 1500
lets see if i can get any stats :
Description: Networking driver
Path: C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers
Component Version: 4.82
from router (actiontec)
VPI:  0
VCI: 38
DSL Mode: MMODE
Connection Status: Showtime
Speed (down/up): 8128/448
ATM QoS class: UBR
Near End CRC Errors (I/F): 3/0
Far End CRC Errors (I/F): 7/0
Near End RS FEC (I/F): 1159/0
Far End RS FEC (I/F): 2169/0
SNR Margin (Downstream/Upstream): 11/25
Transmit Power (Downstream/Upstream): 19/12
Attenuation (Downstream/Upstream): 28/26
Please note I do not know what any of the above means Sad
any ideas?
anyone know how to troubleshoot nics?
hopefully my new motherboard will have a better nic than the one i have now.
I am stumped.
thanks

Re: new router, very low speeds :(

ok something is strange somewhere
can play games fine and get very low pings
this was on my usb modem
tried speed test with usb modem and have got this :
IP profile for your line is - 6500 kbps
    DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM)  7616 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 935 kbps

I think i might have to do a system restore.
something is not right
any ideas where to even start?
thanks

Re: new router, very low speeds :(

Have you run the BT speed test at a quiet time? That may indicate a problem with the exchange if you can get good speeds outside peak times.
You can check your exchange status at http://usertools.plus.net/exchanges/
Have you checked what https://portal.plus.net/my.html?action=stable_rate says for your speed?

Re: new router, very low speeds :(

from plusnet page :
Your High-speed Broadband Service
Your current broadband speed is 6500 Kbps
exchange is showing green :
Results: Wells

Code: SSWEL
County: Somerset
Enabled: 23 Jul 2003
Colour: Green VP capacity at this exchange is currently showing as Green.
i think it maybe windows has gone wrong somewhere.

Re: new router, very low speeds :(

Hmm.  Not looking great.
For what it's worth, you should still be able to get good pings on a connection of that speed.
Have you made any changes on your computer recently apart from trying a new router?

Re: new router, very low speeds :(

one thing i forgot about, and not sure if it will affect speed tests, I am on level plusnet traffic management

Action: Level 1 Management  will apply to your peak-time usage until the end of the billing month. Please avoid exceeding 25GB or further management will be applied.
will this cause problems with the speed tests?
if yes then nothing to worry about.
strange it is also affecting all 2 routers and my usb modem as well if not.
only thing i was trying to do was update my mobo drivers, but this failed anyway (cannot seem to install 5.10 nforce drivers).
will try the speedtests on friday night again, as my month renewal is tommorow.
so that should clear the traffic management.
or wait until saturday after the total pc upgrade.

Re: new router, very low speeds :(

Hi Zippy,
Level 1 management should have no impact on your HTTP speeds.
I'll certainly be very interested to see if you notice a change to your speed once your billing date has passed.

Re: new router, very low speeds :(

more likely windows xp has gone wonky somewhere.
was thinking of doing a total re-install last night, but ran out of time.
was trying a 100Mb test file from a ftp server last night using my binatone and looking at the network traffic from task manager the highest it peaked at was 2%, the rest was around 0.73 and 1%.
which looks as though something is throttling somewhere.
it is very bizarre as only started happening when I tried  the zyxel router on the 19th.
will let you know how it goes on friday and also after saturday.
one thing though playing world in conflict last night I had great ping times (very low).
just seems to be all other  traffic that is affected.
cheers
