mybroadbandspeed.co.uk/

I discovered this speed test site a few days ago (previously been using http://www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk). I like the way it stores the results and could be useful the way it builds up the history of tests.
Does anyone know how long it keeps the results for? Hopefully it doesn't loose them after just a month. Also how does it know who I am each time I connect. It is not relying on a cookie as just tried it with firefox for the first time instead of IE7 and it displayed my previous results. I can only presume it is looking at my ip address. That would work for me as I am on a fixed IP as with all Metronet customers, but as far as I know Plusnet customers are not on a fixed IP unless they ask for it.

Re: mybroadbandspeed.co.uk/

you can register on this site:
http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest
and it will automagically update your profile.  you can also share your findings and read the pretty histogram it produces.

Hi James
Are you saying just copy the stats and keep a record myself or am I reading into your post the wrong way?
BTW, I am a little perplexed by those figures you posted. The kbps figures seem to be mutiplied by 10. Do you see what I mean?

Re: mybroadbandspeed.co.uk/

I am not sure how long it does keep them for, It had been said it is something to do with cookies, When PN went from the old one to this all previous results were lost  perhaps it is just a page, there is no page button on the results, any way here are mine  - I had some trouble but it seem to have cured itself.

Re: mybroadbandspeed.co.uk/

Just looked at my own History and the oldest date was the 12th April. After I ran another test just now it was the 17th April. It seems that it is not the length of time, but the number of entries under the history tab that is the limiting factor.

Re: mybroadbandspeed.co.uk/

Think the results are connected to you by use of a cookie, as my IE 7 results look like

Re: mybroadbandspeed.co.uk/

My Firefox and IE results are identical despite the fact that I never really use IE. I always thought this was cookie based but that would suggest otherwise.
I'll ask around and try and find out.

Taking a guess based upon my experience of James' posts in the past!
He's doing two things - firstly showing off how fast his office connection is.
Secondly demonstrating that it holds results for a long time as his results date from Jan.
Could be wrong though. Wink

Re: mybroadbandspeed.co.uk/

From a look at the code, it checks for the existence of a cookie. If that cookie doesn't exist, then it finds the IP in the database. If that works, it sets a cookie based on that and if it doesn't, it creates a new ID and uses that for future speed tests.

That makes sense with what I found as when I viewed it in Firefox for the first time, it had all my previous results listed from checks using IE7, so it must have worked out who I am from my fixed IP address. To confirm this I just deleted all my cookies and it still listed my speed history the next time I opened IE7.
Cheers for clearing it up.
