modem need's a reboot daily

hi,
Every so often mostly at night (9pm ish) my connection goes from being a solid 18mbps to 4mbps and loads of packet-loss. After a restart this problem can be fix but then I'm left with a higher ping and 2-3 more restart can lower my ping by up to 10ms.

I was told If I have interleaving turn to fast path I could get packet-loss like this but I pluged my other modem in and it shows my line is interleved not on fast path as I requested. Could this be due to the restarts? and can i please re request fast path please.

Has anyone else had this problem and know how to stop the connection needing restarting all the time.
thanks.

Re: modem need's a reboot daily

I'm having the same sort of problem, past couple of nights I've noticed that after around 7pm my speed drops a lot, even running BT's Speedtester shows speeds lower than 1mb, not much fun watching a 20 minute video when it takes 40 minutes to finish, the rest of the day my connection is rock solid 13mb (I'm on Unlimited so there is no chance that it's down to me being over my limit).
I've checked and my exchange capacity is Green so it's not that either.

Re: modem need's a reboot daily

The packet-loss thing has only happened 3 times but its done it two times in a row now and I thought I should report it rather than wait.
Restarting my router to gain a better ping is something Ive noticed right from the start. Reason being I had problems getting some games and VoIP to work in them. The only way around this problem I found was to use the DNZ function, the modem would become slow and unresponsive until a restart. the whole time I would have a ping test running and I also noticed the ping would be higher when the router was being problematic. Some time I need to do this after adding a game port.
Also When using DNZ thing's would be fine to start with but after I turn my computer on and off, I would be unable to connection and would have to assign a ip to my network card. Some game would only work when setup like this.
When this isn't happening things seem to be fine and after the last maintenance BT did, streaming bbci player works fine too.
I also use the plusnet guide that uses telnet to open some ports or something.

Re: modem need's a reboot daily

I think mines profile related, at midnight my internet speed goes back up to normal speeds which to me seems to suggest that it's my profile, but it wouldn't explain why the BT speed test drops as (as far as I know) no traffic shaping is done on that at all, so it's kinda off.

Re: modem need's a reboot daily

I think I might buy a better modem/router. I still haven't been able to host a game or vent server. I can only set DNZ to one device at a time and I cant get some programs to work online without it. I like to use a second pc for hosting vent or maybe a game server once in a while but not with this router Sad.

Edit: getting packet-loss again and going to have to do a restart of the router.

Does this status post sort of look like your issue?  It does mine I think.

Re: modem need's a reboot daily

yes it could well be. Because the tracert test seems to show packet-loss in the root and not at the modem end if that makes sense. But then again its the restarts that fix the problem so unless it keep's re-root's me back to the problem then I don't understand.
I'm starting to think my problem might be because I reboot my modem like 3am and sync with less noise, so when it gets to say 7pm there is a lot more electric noise. But the trace test shows more time out after the modem and I keep getting random hopes with no replay at all and some time always on the same hope

I haven't restarted the modem yet, it does get worse later on at night. I wasnt getting any PL while doing this test. it seems to happen in bursts.

Re: modem need's a reboot daily

Definately something going on there, you have too many hops!

I get the same after kingston that you do, but I complete in 9 hops, I'm off the PN network at hop 5 when it takes you till hop 7, though could be the way it works, no idea, I'm sure someone who knows these things will have a look but it does look weird to me that it takes more hops for you than me (though could simply be that I'm on ptw-ag02 and you're on pcl-ag0Cool

Re: modem need's a reboot daily

seems like the packet-loss has stopped. I read in the other post they was having similar problem that seem to be a gateway issues as 2-3 restart's of the modem seem to fix it for me.
I wonder if locking the snr back up to 6db from 3 would make my line more  stable? this changed after I requested interleaving turned off but seem its still on. I only seem to have faster download speeds but more errors.
Any chance I could request again for fast path?

Re: modem need's a reboot daily

It's probably not worth going to fast path if you're seeing errors.

Re: modem need's a reboot daily

hi jo,
I didn't get any errors before when my snr was at 6db. This changed when I ask for fast path in the first place. I'm glad I took screen shots now.
Could I request my down stream snr locked (pined) at 6db and fast path please?

Re: modem need's a reboot daily

Hi Blim,
I have set your profile to 6dB downstream SNR. This is not a permanent fix and is subject to changes depending on line stability. Your profile is currently on fast path.

Re: modem need's a reboot daily

thanks jo
Dose a restart or reconnect change the gateway coz it seems to lower ping sometimes?

Re: modem need's a reboot daily

You can just go into the router interface and click disconnect then connect again. Smiley
