Re: maxed- yesterday

Well the whole lot has run for 16 hours and I have now switched off the lot and started up again my readings are now

System Up Time 00:15:48
Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
WAN PPPoA 1217 1233 0 309 1129 00:14:16
LAN 10M/100M 1779 1750 0 1295 387 00:15:44
WLAN 11M/54M 65 0 0 10 0 00:15:35

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 1440 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 63 db 15.5 db
Noise Margin 6 db 11 db

These give the best connection speed so far.and I dont want to loose it,Seems as if as long as I stay connected the speed stays the same
Would it be O.K to  leave the Netgear DG834G switched on all the time and switch off the computer?? as all the lights stay on the router, or do I need to be fired up on the computer and connected to plusnet all the time ?Huh
Thanks for any views  E

Re: maxed- yesterday

Routers are designed to be left on so yes, you can leave the router running.
Note: Line conditions can change and loss of sync does occur so leaving it on does not guarantee it will always stay at the same sync rate. It's just how things are with ADSL Max!

Re: maxed- yesterday

Will this have the same efect as leaving the whole lot on, ? or will the exchange "know"  the computer is not on on and alter the profile  may be

Re: maxed- yesterday

The PC plays no part in the ADSL connection in your case. It's the router that does all the work.

Re: maxed- yesterday

But I  Presume Plusnet does, as they seem to be able to do "things" to the connection

Re: maxed- yesterday

No. As stated above there is no way to know what is connected to your side of the router and that applies to PN as well.
What PN can do is change their settings that affect the connection between your router and the internet and this is done without needing to know what equipment you have connected to the router.

Re: maxed- yesterday

Thanks for your help, my readings this morning are and have been for a long time with  just the netgear on overnight

System Up Time 23:09:14
Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
WAN PPPoA 78913 93057 0 225 1323 19:45:29
LAN 10M/100M 116700 101402 0 1383 288 23:09:10
WLAN 11M/54M 456 0 0 0 0 23:09:01

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 1504 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 63 db 15.5 db
Noise Margin 6 db 10 db

My speed on the speed tester 940 , would I be able to expect anything better as a result of the much improved connection speed or expect PN to change their settings    Regards  E

Re: maxed- yesterday

You'd need the downstream sync speed to go over 1600kbit/s or so before you'll get an improved profile, AFAIK it goes up in 512kbit increments so until you sync over that speed you won't get anything better than a 1mbit connection. Try putting your router directly in the master socket and filtering absolutely everything plugged into the phone line (if you haven't already).
Hope this helps,
Will

Re: maxed- yesterday

Can I just ask stathe?
How far away from the exchange are you?
You margin's are quite high, which is fine if your far from the exchange. But other than that I would expect you to be able to do better.....

Re: maxed- yesterday

Thanks for your interest I am About 4 miles from the exchange by road  2 of which are saggy roadside cables ,probably 2.5 as the crow.I was originaly told that it was  a borderline case and B.T moved my main socket close to the computer and disconected my other sockets. I purchased a Netgear Router and had a very stable 512 connection for the last year a neighbour has a faster line with B.T and I thought Iwould try and should they let me stay like this my speed will be almost doubled .Obviously Iwant to do the best I can The only other thing would be for B.T to run me a fresh line to the house from the roadside, but they say this would make little change. Am told the 63 Line attenuation is the problem

Re: maxed- yesterday

Yeh it is, so long as you have that problem.
I just hate the thought of people expecting that the speed they have is the best they can do.
In your case, you've spoke to BT so your ok.
But sometimes people get crap speeds and dont need to.

His line attenuation suggests that he's practically on the boundary of even receiving a broadband connection, never mind about the noise margins Smiley

Re: maxed- yesterday

Been stable and connected for 27 hours since I disconected yesterday, I dont feel inclined to disconect again, as my speed with the new PN checker is around 980 and over 1000 last night. With my conditions I would accept that ,but would of course prefer a better line from B.T  . Regards  E

Re: maxed- yesterday

Your line stats are suggesting that you don't need a better line, but you need to move house Smiley

Re: maxed- yesterday

I shant be doing that, I can view the Mendips .to the East Quantocks to the North West,  Blackdowns aprox west and I overlook West Sedgemoor, can see the M5 in the distance , and six or seven church towers. My nearest neighbour is 200yards and we are in a low rainfall area
