last couple of days my speed both upload and download has dropped off

I am Miles from an exchange so every bit and byte counts and for the last few days it seems that the download speed is getting slower and slower  is there any reason for this?

Re: last couple of days my speed both upload and download has dropped off

Hi chrisgiltnane,
I can't see any change on your connection, your profile has been around 2.6Mb/s for a while.
If you run a speed test at http://speedtest.btwholesale.com what speeds does this report?

Re: last couple of days my speed both upload and download has dropped off

Hi showing 2.72 this morning, its been around 2.3 to 2.4 for the last few days but for the last few months I have sat consistently at around 2.8 to 2.9 . That doesnt sound like much of a drop but at my speeds its noticeable

Your line is erroring, do you have a test socket you can connect to?

yes i do, do you want me to plug a  filter direct to that and run it for a while?

Re: last couple of days my speed both upload and download has dropped off

It would be good if you could, yes. We'll then see if there's any difference over a 24 hour period.

is it best to re-cycle the router at the same time or just swap it over?

Re: last couple of days my speed both upload and download has dropped off

ok I didnt have a master socket i have a adsl 1.0. plate. however i have taken the front off and put a new micro filter into the socket behind to eliminate the adsl 1.0 built in filter and power cycled the router. will see how that goes. I assume it will take a few hours to re-train itself.

Re: last couple of days my speed both upload and download has dropped off

It won't need to retrain, but we'll be able to see if your line continues to error or not.

Re: last couple of days my speed both upload and download has dropped off

Your SNR is very low for a line of your length although it is very stable, your line is also running faster in your test socket.

Re: last couple of days my speed both upload and download has dropped off

Hi Chris,
Is the target SNRM for this line 3dB?
The DS attenuation is way over Chris Pettitt's 45dB 'rule of thumb' for ADSL2 being beneficial.  Is there any merit in moving this line to ADSL(1)?

@Chrsigiltnane,
Given that you are getting a marked increase in synch in the test socket, there is some possibility that there is an issue with you internal wiring.  Can you please confirm if you have a phone extension and how it is (they are) wired?

Re: last couple of days my speed both upload and download has dropped off

The only difference between the two setups is i have removed the BT adsl v1.0 plate off the front which has filter built in and put in an old  but unused dlink filter straight into the test socket. so if there is a problem its within the adsl v 1.0 faceplate. As that is only difference. no other internal wiring has change and the same handset is connected to the filter as was connected to the adsl v1.0 plate.
Don't know the answer to your first question. I just want the best speed i can get given the lack of high speed connectivity in the area. As I say I have had 2.8 to 2.9 consistantly  for months and it has only recently dropped down to 2.4 to 2.6

Re: last couple of days my speed both upload and download has dropped off

@Chrisgiltnane,
Can you please confirm which of these is your master socket - https://portal.plus.net/support/broadband/master-socket-guide.shtml - and that the removed faceplate has no wires attached to it?

@DCT,
If this looks like a BT supplied ADSL filter issue, is this a call out job or a "stay connected to the test socket" fix?  The synch speed in the test socket is markedly higher than what might be reasonably expected on a line having this attenuation.
Please do not forget my ADSL(1) question above.

This rule of thumb is probably a load of rubbish, I suspect it has nothing to do with the technical characteristics of ADSL2, ADSL2 should be greater than or equal to ADSL1 for all line lengths. It probably has more to do with Plusnet not wanting your low speed to be lowering the average for their "up to 24M" speeds. They would rather have your low speed included in the up to 8M group. If not I would be interested in seeing some actual data rather than anecdotal assertions.
And for the very longest lines, ADSL2 should provide slightly more bandwidth because it can use tones that can only support having 1 bit allocated to them, whereas ADSL1 requires a tone to have sufficient SNR for at least 2 bits.
