just upgraded my old Thomson 585 v7 router to a new billion 770n

Was there anything you were trying to achieve? As you sync at the max rate getting a different router won't make a difference.

Your old figure had an attenuation of 6dB, suggesting you live in the flat above the exchange!
With that, I'd expect you to get the maximum speed - 8128 is the max for ADSL1 technology, so that looks fine.
But I'd have expected you to have a much higher SNR figure than 7dB. Not, in this case, because you were suffering from noise. Because you are close, I'd expect you to just have a lot of unused SNR overhead.
The new figures change slightly, and the 8dB attenuation moves you away from the exchange by 200 metres (to 600 metres).
Now you achieve the same speed, but the SNR moves up to 14.3dB, showing (more correctly) that you have an awful lot of spare overhead before noise threatens your speed.
But even with an attenuation of 8dB, you'd still sync at a full 24Mbps on ADSL2+... if the exchange had the equipment.
