getting lots of short wifi drops that are not resetting the hub

Hi all

Been getting a lot of wifi drops on all connected devices, lasting only a few seconds.  The hub doesn't reset after these drops, been happening on and off for the last 3 months.

Thanks

Ian b

Do you see any changes in the colour of the Hub lights at these times?

No, The hub lights do not change, just stays blue the hub doesn't try to resync.

OK, so how are you 'seeing' these drops?

laptops and wired desktop have the no internet symbol on the bottom notification bar, phone has an exclamation mark next to wifi strength sign.

Which router/Hub do you have? Sight of the error log may be useful.

From that, it appears your laptop is for some reason being unable to hold on to the lease. I'm not an expert on networking, so I'm not going to claim I am correct here.

Maybe @MisterW  or @Dan_the_Van could be more useful.

Does look to be the case, but its happening to all devices including when connected by ethernet

it's a Hub1 if that is relevant.

Re: getting lots of short wifi drops that are not resetting the hub

Looks like the laptop is toggling between the 5 GHz (I assume radio ath00) and 2.4 GHz (I assume radio ath01) channels.

See Highlights:WIFI dropout.jpg

5 GHz WiFi is usually faster but shorter range. It does not travel through walls, floors or Windows as well as 2.4 GHz.

Whilst 2.4 GHz can travel further it is more prone to interference from neighbours WiFi (as the neighbours WiFi can travel further) and other RF signals in the 2.4 GHz band such as Microwave ovens, baby monitors, video senders and smart meter zigbee signals etc....

As the 2.4 GHz signal is only maintaining a 6 Mbps link it would suggest interference from other RF signals.

I would suggest using a WiFi analyser App on a mobile phone to see if Neighbours WiFi signals are a factor.

Re: getting lots of short wifi drops that are not resetting the hub

ath00 is 2.4Ghz, ath10 is 5Ghz
so the slow speed would suggest a week 5Ghz signal.
Try splitting the wireless name for the 5Ghz signal by adding -5 to the end.

Thanks, @RichardB . As I said, I'm no expert, and I admit I hadn't spotted the toggling. As I assume the laptop isn't physically moving (?), what could cause that?

Re: getting lots of short wifi drops that are not resetting the hub

The toggling will be either be due to a weak signal or interference.

@Dan_the_Van advises that my assumption on which radio is the 5GHZ and the 2.4 GHz was back to front.

As such is the 5Ghz that can only support a 6 Mbps link speed.
Unless @iwbrock lives in close proximity to Neighbours (maybe flats) that indicates a weak signal.

I wonder how far apart the router and laptop are - different floors of a house?

A WiFi analyser image for both bans might be informative.

Re: getting lots of short wifi drops that are not resetting the hub

@RichardB

The Hub One does suffer from the toggling between signals.

Some devices attempt to maintain a 5Ghz signal if it sees one, hence the toggling

The thinking behind splitting the wireless name, then the user chooses the strongest signal.

Edit: a Hub Two does not have this issue.

@Dan_the_Van

Very true, but this makes me also wonder whether it's the hub going on the blink

Perhaps it's time to ask for a Hub 2 to try.
