email just went funny again

This error - see picture - also trying to send an email from another machine failed.
In both cases a retry fixed it

I've just had similar (10:12:06) but checking my router logs it looks like my PPP session went down briefly (times are in UMT and not BST by the way) -

Why that happened I don't know but I have my suspicions so I'm going to check a few things out...

Hmm.  I can't telnet to it either.
... helps if I use port 110 instead of 25!
Seems to be working fine from here (home).

I'm getting regular, but intermittent, time-out errors connecting to one of my mailboxes. It's been happening for two days at least.  Not the end of the world, though it is getting annoying.

We recently identified a mail collection problem that was being caused by an issue affecting the communication between our two main sites here in Sheffield. This specifically affected mail authentication but I'm wondering whether or not it was responsible for the sporadic time-outs that have been reporting of late too?
The problem has now been fixed so I'd be interested to know whether or not we get many more reports of this over the coming weeks?

Thanks for the update Bob. 
Intermittent failure of email connections has become one of life's features recently.  So frequent that it ain't worth reporting if it succeeds on a retry (or 2?).  I'll keep an eye on things over the next week or so and report if things have improved
