email blocked addresses not working?

I have one guy who keeps sending me spam. I have added him to the blocked adresses but I get at least one email a day from him despite this. Undecided
Does the blocking part actually work at all?
I am assuming that I need to put the from: address in, not the Reply-To: - is that correct?
I'd be happy to share headers with PlusNet if they wish to investigate this matter.

Re: email blocked addresses not working?

I have forwarded the headers to PlusNet via a ticket and will await their comments.

Re: email blocked addresses not working?

Yes, there's a known problem. See Problem 51287 Blacklisting Not Working.
We have a fix but need to decide on how to handle these messages. There's inconsistencies in some of the info out there.
On the Manage My Mail pages it says:
Quote
Messages from addresses in the Approved list will always be delivered. Messages from addresses in the Blocked list will always be rejected.

However, in my original blog it says:
Quote
Email from blacklisted addresses and domains will *always* be identified as spam by the system.

If you're using the Quarantine option then mail from blacklisted addresses gets delivered but is identified as spam and Quarantined.
We need to decide what to do though if you don't have Quarantine enabled. My suggestion would be that we should reject the message, what do other people think?

Re: email blocked addresses not working?

Thanks Bob, that was also the answer i got from PN support eventually.
Personally I'd like such messages rejected.

Re: email blocked addresses not working?

I'd agree that it should be rejected.
If somebody has gone to the trouble of blacklisting it, they must be pretty certain that they don't want the messages.
Perhaps there is scope for grey-listing stuff that folks want to have delivered but quarantined in a future version?

Re: email blocked addresses not working?

Ok, we'll take a look at rejecting it then.

Re: email blocked addresses not working?

Would anyone have any objections if we were to reject the message with:
550 Sender address rejected: me@privacy.net

Re: email blocked addresses not working?

Not sure about that, Bob.  Wouldn't we be telling the spammer that we'd gone to the trouble of blacklisting them, so they must be aiming at a good address?Huh

Re: email blocked addresses not working?

You could argue that, but bear in mind that most spam will be sent from infected windows machines (ie. not the IP of the spammer) and the sender address will almost definitely be spoofed so the spammer's hardly likely to be checking the mailbox for NDR's.
I personally think the message is vague enough whilst retaining enough information for diagnostic purposes, but I'm open to suggestions.
We would like to get this fix out today mind you.
