download speed

Hi, any chance of any of you moderators manually tweaking my download speed? I am on the 8meg package and am receiving a poor 900kps, much lower than I received with Orange. The line should easily support 2.5 meg.

Re: download speed

The mods can't I'm afraid - they aren't staff, but volunteer their time. Having said that there's a few of us staff members about on here too, I'll take a look for you now. In the mean time, would you be able to post your line stats as reported by your router please?

Re: download speed

Hi, I am well aware that the package is "UP TO" but the point is that the line should support 2.5 meg, and that my download speed is significantly slower than when I was with Orange, and I'm sure Plusnet can do better than that wretched company!
Can you explain how to check the router stats please? Thanks!

Re: download speed

Have a look at http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/frogstats.php you should hopefully be able to find your router and get the stats.

Re: download speed

That sync speed looks about right for a line with 55dB attenuation and a target noise margin that seems to be 15dB. Does your line have a history of transmission errors and/or disconnections which has led the DLM to raise the target noise margin?

Re: download speed

Hi, no, as far as I'm aware, there is no history of transmission errors or dropouts.

Re: download speed

Have you ever had a sync speed above 3000kbps since you joined Plusnet?

Re: download speed

No, the speed started at around 2200, then gradually fell to 1500, which it remained at for several weeks. About 2 weeks ago it suddenly fell to 900. When I was with Orange it averaged 2000.

Re: download speed

Were you on a BT IPstream connection with Orange, or on LLU (Orange's own broadband equipment)?

Re: download speed

What are the router stats like now after 6 hours up? I'm particularly interested in the FEC, CRC and HEC errors.

Re: download speed

Hi Steve,
It looks like there might be an intermittent connection present on the line (unless you're powering the router down 5 times a day or so). If the former I'd definitely recommend raising us an intermittent fault at http://faults.plus.net
If it is you powering the router off then on again I'd recommend telling the router to disconnect and then reconnect, as a forced reboot like that looks like a loss of connection to the exchange and may cause a drop in profile.

Re: download speed

FAO spraxit and Matt Taylor: Sorry spraxit, I had already shut down the modem before I read your message. I will leave it on for a few hours and post the router stats this evening.
Hi Matt, I do power the modem on and off several times a day to save wasting power. Are you saying that the exchange sees this as dropouts?
Also I am confused as to what you mean by telling the router to diconnect and then re-connect.
