distance to exchange

A colleague is thinking of getting broadband, and we were discussing the distance from the exchange. I know there's a way to measure it, but I can't remember where. CAn anyone help?

Re: distance to exchange

Thanks Spuggy.
He's also just done a BT speedcheck on the number, and it says his maximum speed is around 0.5 Mb. I know he lives in the wilds of Essex, but that seems very low!
(According to DSL zone, he's 4.53 Km as the crow flies from the exchange.)

Re: distance to exchange

Others will know more than me (cue PN bod Wink ) but 0.5Mb would seem about right esp as the real length of the line would me more than 5km and that is definatly a long line!

Re: distance to exchange

Line speed is determined by the signal strength and signal to noise ratio on the line. Line length has a big effect, but the quality of the wiring is just as important. 4.5km of new wire would give better speeds than old wires with lots of corroded joints, but 0.5Mb would sound about right. The test websites can only give an estimate of the likely speeds. You can try this one as well.

Re: distance to exchange

You might try the Kitz checker here. This gives quite a comprehensive summary including distance by road.
