deterioration in connection speed after installing new router

After bricking my Netgear router when installing the latest firmware (thanks, Netgear!) I've bought a TP-Link VR200 about a week ago. This seems to work pretty well, but my connection speed has dropped about 600kB/s. I'm linked with Ethernet to the router. Router stats are:

Upstream Downstream
Current Rate(kbps) 1016 3589
Max Rate(kbps) 1024 3980
SNR Margin(dB) 6.2 4.9
Line Attenuation(dB) 25.6 50.3
Errors(pkts) 67 210

Plusnet line speed is 3.3

Download from BT profiler is 2.86

Upload is 0.69

IP Profile from BT is only 3.16/0.83

S/N looks pretty good (much better with this router than the Netgear) so I'm wondering if an exchange reset might pay off? Though the error rate seems quite high - it's a rural connection so maybe we have line issues (again...)

We have a dSLAM box now but we are too far (2.5km) to get VDSL - at least, there's no VDSL offer. Is there any way to get Openreach to try it? Current speeds are shocking, and Phase 2 hasn't even been tendered yet, yet alone get an implementation plan.
