Re: connection up & down

Hi Steve,
The router cannot get synch up and establsh ppp session to PN.  Can you try the following...
1. Quiet line test - dial 17070 option 2 - line should be quiet. If there is noise on the line raise a adult report with your phone service provider.  You might find tat making a call to your home number and letting it ring could give temporary relief if there is noise.
2. Change the filter.
3. Try the router connected to the master socket.
If this makes no difference raise / follow the fault reporter here - http://faults.plus.net
HTH until the DCT guys are around on Tuesday.

Re: connection up & down

I have found that the Billion 7800 series seem to occasionally lose or corrupt it's supposedly non-volatile configuration settings, causing inexplicable connection problems like what you are describing.
I have found the only reliable solution is to reset the device to factory defaults, cleanly reconfigure all settings from scratch, "Save Config", then wait a few seconds and then reboot the gateway.  On restart it will work perfectly, and will continue working for many months.
Since powering my 7800 via an uninterruptable mains power supply I haven't needed to reconfigure my unit, so I have my suspicions that these devices are susceptible to mains power spikes or glitches - so you might want to do the same, or at least use a surge protected extension lead.
You might also want to read this previous thread - https://community.plus.net/forum/index.php/topic,117883.0.html

Re: connection up & down

Hi,
I did the quiet line test and there was audible hiss so removed the nte5 faceplate & plugged directly into the test socket no hiss so either filter or the 2m of extension wiring was faulty, turns out it was the later although why it's suddenly caused a problem is a mystery.
The only reason there's 2m of extension is when the council fitted central heating the only place to put the radiator was right next to the BT master socket,,,, hopefully if i decide to go for fibre I can get BT to reposition the master closer to where the line enters the house.
Prior to removing the extension:
Upstream 993
Downstream 5319
SNR Margin(Upstream) 5.8
SNR Margin(Downstream) 19.4
Line Attenuation(Upstream) 26.8
Line Attenuation(Downstream) 43.5
After
Upstream 1024
Downstream 9959
SNR Margin(Upstream) 5.7
SNR Margin(Downstream) 6.0
Line Attenuation(Upstream) 26.6
Line Attenuation(Downstream) 43.0
Hopefully that's how it will stay, many thanks to both of you for your help.
Steve
Edit: Wasn't my wiring at fault - the extension box was jammed full of spiders & other insects mostly dead.......
