Re: broadband still not working properly

i see, and yes some one phone yesterday seem the fault is on bts side things so they are giving me a call back with 48hours of last night, i got the bt router working thanks for help there jojo. seems to have improved my upload so i am thinking the thompsom router was the culprit for that, i did a ping test and got loads of jitter, as i understand it jitter is a unwanted signal imposing or mixing with mine wat can cause that ? and how can i correct it? regards emx

Re: broadband still not working properly

WOW @ CRC Errors (Down/Up)  238 / 2147480000
That is an insane amount of errors..... INSANE!!!
I assume in your last post that was the BT router?
Notice the difference from your last post: CRC Errors (Up/Down):  0 / 547
Any CRC is bad
I have had 0/3 in the last 7 weeks.
If you have that many CRC errors in the test socket you need a broadband engineer out to your house like.... yesterday

Re: broadband still not working properly

In very very simple terms, CRC or Cyclic redundancy checks make sure that the data arrives at your end in the same way it was sent, i.e. all the 1's and 0's in the data packets are in the same order. if they are not they will fail the CRC check and have to be sent again which would explain why your speeds seem so slow if everything is getting sent multiple times.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyclic_redundancy_check if you want to understand it in detail.

Re: broadband still not working properly

The ping time is the time taken for a packet to get sent out to a destination, and for a response packet to make it back.
If multiple packets are sent out, then each response will take a different amount of time to get back, so there are multiple ping times.
Jitter is an indication of how variable those various ping times are. Low jitter means that all the ping times are similar, while a high jitter indicates a large variation in the times.
High Jitter indicates delays somewhere in the path between you and the destination. It might be a delay caused by retries on your DSL line, but could be a queue in any of the routers inbetween A and B. It is hard to tell, unless the thing being pinged is immediately on the other side of your DSL connection.
BTW - I'm not convinced that the CRC value of 2147480000 is a real reading.
It is suspiciously close to the value for 2^31 (2147483648) to be a coincidence - and is more likely a bad output of a negative number, or somesuch.
I'd trust it more if I'd seen errors gradually accumulating up to that value, rather than it suddenly appearing.
It is also untrue that *any* CRC is a bad thing. When you turn interleaving off (to reduce the ping time) you are also removing the error correction (so FEC counts become zero).
This does indeed mean that any errors that could have been corrected (using FEC) are now hard errors (counted within CRC) that must be retried.
But the positive aspect of turning interleaving off is that you gain the bandwidth used by the FEC mechanism (for example, 7616 becomes 8128 kbps, a gain of 6%). Getting CRC counts as high as 6% would then only put you back to square one. There are 59 ADSL frames/sec, so around 3 CRC's/sec is about break-even.
Certainly emzx23x's CRC count of 238 in 18 hours (downstream) is fine - around 13 CRC's/hour, or about 0.01%. Similar to my own line.

i see well explained wombat thank you for your input, so crc may not be the problem as i had interleaving turned off

Re: broadband still not working properly

Right - thats looking pretty stable. Another 238 CRC errors over the last 23 hours, and no more loss of signal. No change to that upstream CRC count, making me more convinced that it is bogus.
If the line keeps looking stable, then you might be able to get some speed improvements: However, "Stability first, speed second" is BT's motto here.
Have BT done anything to your line yet? Your last mention of this was that you expected a call back within 48hrs.
Right now your noise margin looks to be targetted around 15dB, which will have been set that high by BT because of previous errors.
It isn't clear if your current stability is because the noise margin is that high, or because BT have fixed your line, or (perhaps) things have been fixed because of the new router.
Oh - and were those figures with the router plugged into the test socket?

Re: broadband still not working properly

yea in the test socket and no call back from plusnet yet or bt but plusnet replaced the router with another one of same model which arrived today, going to send it back as i am not impressed with it in the slightest.
and to my knowledge bt havn't done anything to my line yet. been waiting for my ip profile to update for 2 days lol

Re: broadband still not working properly

Hi emzx23x,
we sent you a router as part of the fault finding process, it would really help us find out what is going on if you were to test it.

different adsl filter would it change my downstream on router? ie other adsl filter was 2900ish and this one is 2750 is that possible cause ill put the old one back on if it is
