The base ping you get once connected to a gateway, is it suppose to change without any drop in PPP connection?
I have noticed for the last 4 days that my ping is changing with any loss in connection, usually at 12pm.

I'd suspect BT changes in the routing between the exchange the Plusnet gateway. As this is tunnelled we can't see it on a tracert.
