I have just moved house and I have no complaints about my broadband but I wondered if 7Mbps is the maximum speed anyone can actually get from an 8Mbps service. The best Upload speed I can ever get is 390 kbps, again, is this the best I can expect as I am within 300Mtrs of the exchange. Here are some various stats.
BT Test reports:
Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test: -provides background information.
IP profile for your line is - 7150 kbps
DSL connection rate: 448 kbps(UP-STREAM) 8128 kbps(DOWN-STREAM)
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 5812 kbps
PlusNet reports current broadband speed is 7000 Kbps & speed test:
16-08-2007 10:52:13 6525.8
Router Data:
Data Rate
Stream Type Actual Data Rate
Up Stream 448 (Kbps.)
Down Stream 8128 (Kbps.)
Operation Data
Operation Data Upstream Downstream
Noise Margin 17 dB 11 dB
Attenuation 14 dB 10 dB
Any comments on this data most welcome.

You do actually get information transfers at sync speed - 8128kbps - but approximately 10% of that is ATM packaging overheads and 3% TCP overheads leaving 7150kbps for the payload - the data. The profile values you see have these overheads stripped out so they reflect ideal data transfer capability. Hope this explanation quells your unease - you aren't being done.

Thanks for the replies, it was intersting to read the thread paulby mentioned. If I understand it then I should request my PN profile be raised to 7500 as I will most likely see a slight improvement in throughput. I realise that upload speed isn't a major deal but I do wonder why I can never get better than 390kbps, (yes I know I could pay more for the 896) has anyone got to 400?
I would add that I know how fortunate I am to be so close to the exchange, before I moved the best I ever saw was 3500, so hey I now get double the speed for my money!

Both of my lines (home and office) manage 448 upload even though download speed is less than yours on both (6000 and 4000 respectively. Tis odd you cannot get this.

As far as upload speed is concerned, the same overheads apply as on download speeds.
448kbps information rate less 10% for ATM overheads less 3% for TCP overheads = 391kbps payload (useful data) speed. You've got 390kbps, so excellent!
