My nice new Netgear had a problem with awful wireless range, so I purchased 1 of these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/290932910671?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649
I plugged it in at the top of the stairs, and now every room, and down to the end of the garden has full wireless signal.
So I highly recommend this.
My house is Victorian with thick stone walls.

A little tip.. when setting it up as a repeater, the instructions say to enter the SSID in the top of the 3 boxes.
The second box has the SSID of the repeater.
Delete that, and enter your SSID again.
So to clarify, box 1 and 2 should have your SSID and box 3 has the password.
It is obvious what I'm talking about when you see it.
If you follow the instructions, you will end up with a local connection only.
If took me ages to figure out
