Wireless problems

I have a D-link wireless modem/router wired to the main computer using vista.
I have 2 other computers in the house. One is set up with a netgear wireless adapter. The other I am trying to set up in the same way, also with a netgear USB wireless adapter.
I loaded the driver ok and installed the adapter
Running the netgear program it shows that a good signal is being received at 54Mbps.
In internet options I set it to never dial a connection and detect settings automatically. I checked tghe browser to see that there was no tick in browse offline.
I have tried everything I could think of but can't get anything to show up on the browser
I tried installing firefox to see if it was IE6 but no luck there
I called Netgear who had me do everything I did already and had to give up with them because they just had me running around in circles.
They eventually had asked me to try the adapter on another computer to see if it worked but I have reasons for not wanting to do that.
I tried setting up an email account and email sends and receives perfectly.
It has to be an issue with the browser.
I'm using XP professional on that computer by the way
Can anyone help/
Thanks

Re: Wireless problems

What error are they getting from IE ?
If they type 192.168.1.1  into the browser do they get anything?
Can they ping 194.119.131.66 ie from a cmd prompt
try from a cmd prompt tracert 194.119.131.66 and post the results.
If they work then its a problem with IE or the router try
Click Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools, and then click Internet Explorer (No Add-ons).
See if this works if it does then its an addon problem if it is you can cure it for details see

Re: Wireless problems

Thanks for that.
But would it be likely to be an ie problem when I get nothing in firefox either.
I cant remember if I said it before but emails in outlook express work fine both sending and receiving.
You can see on the bottom of the browser that the pages are being found. They are just not loading.

Re: Wireless problems

Have a look in internet options then select connections tab, select LAN settings and make sure that use a proxy server for your LAN is not selected.  I know this can give the problem you are having or something similar.

Thanks but that is one of the first things I checked
Beleive it or not I'm quite knowledgeable on the subject. and this is the first time I've been stumped.
Even Netgear help line didn't get to the bottom of it.
I tried a different adapter from 2wire which I have used on several systems without probs and I couldn't even get it to install on this machine.
By the way, when connected directly to the router via ethernet this machine works fine. There are reasons why we dont want to use it as the main computer though so I'd really liuke to get to the bottom of this

Re: Wireless problems

Since you can ping external ip addresses successfully, you have a working network!
However, I am guessing that you need to sort out your DNS addresses. It's a bit tedious if you change ISP but can I suggest that you use static IP addresses on your local network?
You will need to enter the PlusNet DNS addresses into each PC (as well as your router).

Re: Wireless problems

It sound like a MTU setting wrong as this would do it. I assume every other pc works ok?
get a command prompt ie start run cmd
and then type
netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt
see if that work or post the file c:\resetlog.txt

Re: Wireless problems

Just a thought - but since you can ping addresses and send e-mails it probably isn't this.
Do you have MAC address filtering turned on?  If you have, have you added your PC's MAC address to the whitelist?
