Will I benefit from moving away from Plusnet?

I have the option of moving to another supplier who has ADSL2+. There is no evidence Plusnet will supply this to my exchange (Oakham) in the near future. As I am 3.5 km from the exchange and the line is poor, would I get a  better connection? Currently I get 1.5-2.5 Mbps, recently prone to losing the PPP link several times a day. I am happy with Plusnet service but the speed and connection stability is at the low end.

To be honest not only are you unlikely to see any improvement it is quite possible it would deteriorate.
To get a better idea of your line status can you post speeds, attenuation and noise margin from your router (this link explains how to get them http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/frogstats.php )

Hi Innovations,
Like you say, unfortunately we have no information on the ADSL2+ upgrade on your exchange yet.
Like Jim says, it might be an idea to post your line stats, but given your distance from the exchange, I wouldn't expect much of an improvement from ADSL2/ADSL2+.

The graph below will gave a visual representation of ADSL2+ speeds via distance.

Re: Will I benefit from moving away from Plusnet?

My modem is saying:
Down:  SNR Margin 9.4 db    Line Attenuation  60.2 db
      Up                    19.0 db                            31.5 db
The ADSL is shewing 3136
mybroadbandspeed tester is showing 2298/377 Kbps
BT have me at 2500 Kbps

Re: Will I benefit from moving away from Plusnet?

With that attenuation and the speeds you are getting I would not describe your line as poor - in fact the opposite given the line length and the noise margin.
The point to make is that to get a better effective speed your sync rate would need to increase to over 3424 kbps and you are unlikely to achieve that

Re: Will I benefit from moving away from Plusnet?

From what I've read I'd only consider O2/Be which is at your exchange - would they accept someone with those stats?

Oldjim:
Are you saying you think my line looks OK? If so why I am not getting the 4Mbs on the graph - think a mate a few hundred yards from me gets that speed as well?
Jelv:
There is also Rutland Telecom, who have ADSL2+

Re: Will I benefit from moving away from Plusnet?

Because the distance on the graph is line length not as the crow flies.
You need to look at the attenuation figure which is directly related to line length and assumed a default noise margin of 6dB and perfect conditions.
Looking at the graph and putting in your attenuation I get just under 3000kbps

Re: Will I benefit from moving away from Plusnet?

Line Attenuation  60.2 db is why your speed looks OK.
http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/max_speed_calc.php will give you the expected speeds if you enter the attenuation.
Are you using the master socket or an extension? If you are using an extension it would be worth checking if the router stats look better if you plug direct in to the test socket.

Re: Will I benefit from moving away from Plusnet?

Look at the circled area on the graph for your attenuation. The question was will an improvement be seen moving to ADSL2+ and the answer is no.

Note that the graph is strictly only applicable to Australian ADSL2+  Grin Grin Grin

Re: Will I benefit from moving away from Plusnet?

But the recent Ofcom report on broadband cites Australian data as a reference, leading me to conclude that their system is not significantly different from the UK.
