I've never had any wifi problems with my tg582n router but there's plenty of report here from people who do have issues. As a result I've done a few wifi throughput test to quantify how well the tg582 performs in my environment.
The test are based on the work done by Graham here: http://community.plus.net/forum/index.php/topic,110884.0.html
1) iperf.exe was used as the server on the ethernet connected machine.
Command: iperf -s
2) iperf.exe was used as the client on the wifi connected machine.
Command: iperf -c 192.168.1.10 -t 120 -i 10 -yc >results.txt
The test ran for 120 second giving a result every 10 seconds.
3) The wifi distance was 5 metres, no obstructions.
4) All 130mbps config tests used channel 6, the best at my location.
5) All 300mbps config test used channel 1, the only channel 40Mhz bandwidth works on..
7) I intend at some time to repeat these test at 10 metres with a brick wall obstruction.
Conclusions
a) I'm perfectly happy with these result for my two Technicolor routers, they are within what I consider to be an acceptable range.

b) It's not always the router to blame for weak wifi performance.
My windows vista / Atheros card AR5009 is clearly no match for the windows 8.1 / Atheros AR5B125 combination.
c) My Homehub 3 Type A was absolute rubbish, I'll assume this one is faulty.

What are the capabilities of those atheros wifi cards - are any 1x1, so would only have a max link speed of 65 or 150?
Also it might be worth checking the adapter advanced properties in Windows e.g. 40Mhz may be disabled by default.

Both cards have two antenna leads so I assume they are capable of 40MHz Bw.
The win8.1 machine looks to be achieving 40MHz speeds to me.
Interestingly win8.1 only reports half the set link speed ie 65 or 150.
Whereas the vista machine always reports the full links speed ie 130 or 300.

I thought the number of antennas affects the number of streams supported, but the 20MHz or 40MHz bandwidth is independent of the number of antennas. So a typical single antenna 1x1 design gives a max of 150 at 40MHz channel width. The AR5B125 seems to be 1x1, not so sure about the AR5009, possibly 1Tx2R so supports transmitting at 150 and receiving at 300 (at 40MHz).

I think you're right about the cards.
This would explain why the AR5B125 only shows half set wireless speed both in windows and the routers GUI.
Not sure if the AR5009 is 1x2 or 2x2 but it explains why the full set wifi speed is shown both in windows and the routers GUI. Strange that it's the slower card though, I found a newer driver which I'll try in the near future.
Not actually too bothered about my WiFi speeds, due mainly to my miserable 20mbps fibre speed.
