Why is it so hard to forward ports

Why is it so hard to forward ports on the Technicolor TG582n. Every other router i had you simply put the ports you want to forward and it does it for all devices but on this router you have to assign it as a game. Who came up with that system????
Can anyone recommend how to port forward for ip cameras and for an xbox one as i will be asking plusnet for a new router as this is terrible.

Re: Why is it so hard to forward ports

you can ask plusnet for a new router, but it'll be another TG582n - they don't supply any other.
i set up a port forward on the TG582n and it was extremely easy.
you add the rule, and then assign it to the device you want - same as any other router.

Re: Why is it so hard to forward ports

Every router i have had before this you set the permissions you want through the firewall so inbound rule open port xxxx outbound rule open xxxx.

Re: Why is it so hard to forward ports

as i said, simple
click on toolbox
game & application sharing
create a new game or application
give it a name
manual entry or port maps
enter the port(s) and type
click add
click assign a game or application to a local network device
select the new rule from the dropdown box
select the device
click add
job done

Re: Why is it so hard to forward ports

you can't forward a port to multiple devices.
what is it you are actually trying to do ?

Re: Why is it so hard to forward ports

First thing was the xbox one trying to get the nat type to open from strict.
Second was to get ip cameras to allow remote access (only need port 80 open)
Thirdly i was trying to set up a plex server and needed a certain port opening to allow connection between an apple tv and plex on the computer. I got this working but had to do it an alternative way.
Its just a poor set up in my opinion. Everything just seems backwards and nothing straight forward. On old routers for all of these i click port forward type the ports and away i go on here you have to go through so many steps.

Re: Why is it so hard to forward ports

Seems to me like you just need uPNP to work for Plex/Xbox and set up forwarding for the cameras on different port numbers (e.g. 80, 81, 82 etc). Do you have any camera software?

Re: Why is it so hard to forward ports

plex doesn't need ports open.
i run a plex server and it just needs uPnP to be enabled.
ip camera, you need to open port 80 and then point it to the camera.
xbox shouldn't need a specific opened port.

Plex connect does.
Also i have UpnP enabled but still the nat type is strict, any suggestions as the xbox forum says forward ports.

For the Xbox, try this - http://npr.me.uk/upnp.html

it's internal traffic though, so opening ports would have no affect on that.
ports only need to be opened for traffic incoming from the outside world.
your plex server and the appletv (which i assume is what you have seeing as you're using plex connect) are both internal devices, this port opening would be irrelevant.

I do not intend to be rude, but it's clear that you do not understand what you are trying to do or how to achieve it.
Within your home network from a PC you can address each individual camera and connect to each camera's port 80.  When trying to do the same from the outside world, there is only the address of your router which is accessible - there is no direct means of connecting to any device on the LAN.  That is the purpose of the firewall / nat - to prevent unsolicited intrusion from the outside world into the LAN.
If you want to allow access to each camera you need a rule (open external port and translate to internal port) and a mapping (apply rule X to device / IP address Y).
In your case you have several devices you want to access on port 80.  There is only one port 80 on the external world (WAN) so you need to select a number of ports to map into the LAN - for example...
Rule 1 - 80 to 80
Rule 2 - 81 to 80
Rule 3 - 82 to 80
Rule 4 - 83 to 80
Apply rules to devices
Map rule 1 to camera 1
Map rule 2 to camera 2
Map rule 3 to camera 3
Map rule 4 to camera 4
The from the outside world, pointing a web browser as follows will display...
your.ip:80 camera 1
your.ip:81 camera 2
your.ip:82 camera 3
your.ip:83 camera 4
Once you really understand what you are trying to do, you'll realise that this router is actually easier than most to configure.

Re: Why is it so hard to forward ports

That's good news then!  Cheesy
Since writing my reply, I did wonder if within your LAN you have a "server" application which provides access to / control of all the cameras. If so, opening that up to Internet access would facilitate access to all cameras through a single connection, rather than connecting to each camera.
