Why does Windows 8 Laptop not always connect Automatically

I have a laptop running windows 8.1, but when I switch it on it is a lottery as to whether or not it will auto connect to the wifi (plusnet router).
Sometimes it connects straight away, sometimes putting it into hibernate and then waking it up works, sometimes have to restart.
Have a Freeview HD box, and 3 I-phones and an old laptop running windows Vista which all connect straight away, just the newer laptop that can be temperamental.
Used to have the same issue when I was with BT using a home hub, so fairly sure it's a windows 8 setting.
Anyone any ideas?

I think the answer is Win8.1 - FULLSTOP!
It is not the best OS Microsoft have produced and I'm a MS fan (as opposed to that geeky *nix crud!).

In another browser tab, login into the Plusnet user portal BEFORE clicking the fault & ticket links

Cmon! I have a Windows 8 laptop and I like it.

I have my TG582n router wireless switched to low power and the laptop never fails to automatically connect.

Hi have a Lenovo Ideapad Z580.
Are there any settings I should check that can ensure automatically connects?

My new Windows 8.1 Lenovo seems to connect automatically OK, without being asked to...
However, go to bottom RH of your screen and click the Internet access icon. That will bring up a list of all the local working routers, with yours at the top tagged Connected.
Left click on that and a splash screen shows a box titled 'Connect automatically' to which you can add a tick..
You can also try a reset followed by a connect to tidy up the router.
