Why are PlusNet email addresses .com not .net?

Morning,
There may be an obvious answer but having setup a few people with PlusNet I can't answer the question of why their email addresses are @plus.com instead of @plus.net.
I have trawled around these forums, as well as the www, but nothing obvious leaps out at me.
Answers gratefully received,
Dylan

They are @plus.net, for staff
And @plus.com for customers.

That clears up the position, though doesn't quite answer the question of _why_ PlusNet customers don't have Plus.net addresses.
That answer may be lost in the mists of a Sheffield pub, but thanks for replying.

I suspect that the answer is more a case of "because they are."
No idea why we took that decision at the time, but they've been @username.plus.com for aslong as I can remember.

Re: Why are PlusNet email addresses .com not .net?

Presumably because of the original nomenclature of domain naming conventions.
.net was used to indicate that you are an ISP
.com was for general commercial purposes.
Thus, .net was used for staff, as when they communicate via email, they are doing so as an actual ISP, whereas the addresses given to customers are simply general ones.
username.plus.me and username.plus.biz would have been better examples to follow the conventions, but .com is used so generally that its not an issue.

Good point James.
I'm also practically certain that the 3ld's of .me and .biz came out a bit after our naming convention on email addresses.  Weren't .me.uk's around about 2002/3?

Sorry, yeah, I meant, adoption of those two when they became available would have been a good example of following best practice naming conventions, but the reality is that most people on the net wouldn't recognise why there was a difference, just that there was one.

That's good enough for .me - or at least the wife who took up your free offer and is now m*****.me.uk 🙂

or you could have been on free-online.co.uk, which also has a short form of idps.co.uk and being lucky also .me.uk, these came out during the dial up days but still in use.  IDPS means I Dont Pay Subscriptions, but of course I now do

Re: Why are PlusNet email addresses .com not .net?

I feel like a bit of an old-timer here, as I've been with force9 more or less since they started (I think I joind in around 1994/5, although I'm not absolutely sure).
In the context of this discussion, at the time I joined force9, I was given the e-mail domain, (which incidentally I still use)
**@username.force9.net
I was not then, and never have been, a member of force9's staff, so what that means for the explanations elsewhere in this discussion, who knows.
Just seems that .net and .com have been used pretty much interchangably,

Re: Why are PlusNet email addresses .com not .net?

In my 7-8 years of involvement with Plusnet as a customer and a member of staff, i've only ever knonw staff emails to be @plus.net.uk and @plus.net, I have to say - although I think at one point in time @force9.net etc. worked too...
