Re: Which Gateway when on alternative gateway (BT)

Open a command prompt (vista - type cmd in the program search bar and hit enter, XP - open the run box and type cmd and then hit enter or click open) and then when this appears type 'tracert www.bbc.co.uk'; (without quotes). This will ping each step on the way to the BBC website, the first entry below your own router's IP address will be the gateway to which you are connected.
Hope that helps,

Re: Which Gateway when on alternative gateway (BT)

we need the full name not just the last part.
in Win98 run command to get a dos box then run the tracert command within it. You can then scroll up if it has gone off the screen.

Re: Which Gateway when on alternative gateway (BT)

I'm on lo0-plusnet.pcl-ag01.plus.net - that gives:
Quote
You are currently connected to the "City Lifeline, Juniper 8" gateway. This gateway is sometimes known as pcl-ag01.

Can you check if that is what you are on as I can see you typed it and there is a zero missing in the name you gave - that might explain the error.

Re: Which Gateway when on alternative gateway (BT)

Trouble was Jelv, this is the first time I had used tracert, I tried it on Win 98 and XP, but the output disapeared immediately it has completed the trace, I also had to do a reboot of the logger this morning so I might not be on the same server now. you could be correct that I missed a zero, I definitely did not have the Juniper part. I will now go and have another look.

Re: Which Gateway when on alternative gateway (BT)

as I said, I might now be on a different server as the original error has disappeared

Re: Which Gateway when on alternative gateway (BT)

Pierre, don't type tracert into the 'run' box.
Type cmd into the run box, the type the tracert syntax into the command prompt.
The results will stay on your screen then.
