Re: Where has my 8MB gone?

need a lot more info than that, i.e. what upgrade
a copy of this speed test http://www.mybroadbandspeed.co.uk/
and this one http://www.speedtester.bt.com  when it asks for login id it is the one that you used on your router i.e. username@plus.....
what your PN profile is https://portal.plus.net/my.html?action=data_transfer_speed

Re: Where has my 8MB gone?

Sorry to "steal" your thread but I've had the same problem.
I wasn't at 8MB but just below, in the 74XX range. Now I've got:
Today 09:56 873 kbps (109kB/s) 367 kbps (45.9kB/s)
BT Speedtester:
Test1 comprises of Best Effort Test:  -provides background information.
    Your DSL connection rate: 1152 kbps(DOWN-STREAM),  448 kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP profile for your line is - 7000 kbps
Actual IP throughput achieved during the test was - 763 kbps
PlusNet: Your current broadband speed is 7000 Kbps
Modem:
Status: Up
Downstream Rate: 1152 Kbps
Upstream Rate: 448 Kbps
Seems quite weird!

Re: Where has my 8MB gone?

In both cases the first response is always - what stats do you get from the BT Test Socket?
That's because, believe or not, most (almost all) speed problems are due to local phone wiring faults and using the Test Socket eliminates it.
Edit. PS. No-one gets 8MB which means 8MegaBytes. It's maybe 8Mb - megabits (per second).

Re: Where has my 8MB gone?

Unfortunately I can't do that, I've never had an NTE5 socket here, it comes in from BT, into a Post Office "master" then the phone must have been hard wired in. The previous owners removed the phone and fitted a socket but its not a proper one, just an extension type (and took the lovely rotary dial phone with them!).
I did have an extension for a Sky Box in place until about 4 months ago when I removed it and got the speeds up to the 7000 mark. The wiring basically goes, master box, 1/2 metre wire, extension box, microfilter, one phone, modem. Nothing has changed for the last 4 months, until yesterday, with the speeds.
