What to do to improve speed?

Hi there
I'm new to Plus.Net after leaving Sky due to severe traffic shaping.  My 10 day learning period has recently expired but I don't feel like I'm getting the optimum speed.  If fact, over the weekend I could hardly even open up a web page.  When I did, my speed was clocked at about 0.08 MBPS.
I'm not totally computer illiterate - but I honestly don't know where to start to improve things.  I've read a few articles and threads on the forum which were useful for knowledge, but I don't know how I go about actively taking steps to address the issue.
I've done the usual checks:
I have a new router - Netgear DGN2000
New Microfilter
Checked wired ethernet connection
Checked plugging direct to master socket
My speed is a little better, but a test run about 15 minutes ago showed a speed of 450kbps.  I'm less than 1km from the exchange and I've previously had speeds logged at 7MB with my previous BB supplier.
What "technical" steps or checks can I make to see if I can get my line speed improved - or do I just need to call Plus Net direct?
Finally, I play quite a lot of xBox live gaming.  Anything that I can do to improve ping would be good too.  It's not great at the minute...
Oh - and finally, my SNR seems to be hovering around 12db
ADSL Link  Downstream  Upstream
Connection Speed 8128 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 15.0 db         9.5 db
Noise Margin        12.1 db         29.0 db

Thanks!
Rich

Welcome to the ever growing club of people experiencing severe speed problems.  Speed problems that it seems Plusnet are ignoring!

Re: What to do to improve speed?

can we please work through seeing if there is any other issues effecting the line before passing the OP on to the speed issue thread thats currently running.
ive not followed that thread to closely as am not affected on the 21cn trail but i have seein james post in there saying hes not ignoring the issue
can u also run a traceroute to bbc.co.uk. i belive your lines all ready on fastpath due to your sync speed

Re: What to do to improve speed?

Ip profiles are ok. The traceroute looks awful.
i take it thats over wireless due to the packet loss on hop 1?
is it possable to try a wired connection to the router or try and get a better wireless signal and test again

Re: What to do to improve speed?

Tried 3 more traceroute tests.  The first was from the same location in my lounge (wireless), the second was sat next to my wireless router (wireless) and the third was wired direct to the router.

Re: What to do to improve speed?

Hi aphemia,
The tracerts certainly seem to get better on hop 1 as you get closer to the router, with the wired being the best of the bunch. Are you able to try a speedtest while wired into the router so we can try and narrow down what might be causing the slowdowns?

Re: What to do to improve speed?

Thanks Chris  Smiley
I'm at work now, but I'll try this later and see if I get any difference in download speeds between wired and wireless.  What is the "best" of the various tests to do to give you some usable data?
FYI, my normal connection point is about 9 ft from my N class wireless router - through one internal wall.  My xBox is about 16 ft from the router on the same trajectory!
Thanks

Re: What to do to improve speed?

So, I'm back from work.  I've come straight to this page and done nothing else on the network.
IT HAS TAKEN ME 75 MINUTES TO GET TO THIS PAGE TO POST THIS COMMENT.  Cry
I'm not going to do any more tests now.  I understand based on the Traceroute that I might have an issue with my wireless network (don't understand why) but the critical issue remains totally unusable speed.

Re: What to do to improve speed?

if you pings AND SPEED are better when wired then yes it points to the wireless.

Re: What to do to improve speed?

You need to make sure that the MTU setting on your router is the same or higher than the MTU on your PC - having the router MTU smaller can affect speeds drastically - especially on wireless.

Thanks Jelv
MTU is 1450 on my PC and 1458 on my router.  Does this sound OK?

That's OK - one more thing ruled out!

Re: What to do to improve speed?

So - I was trying to play on xBox live this afternoon - and it was running very badly.  I also kept losing connection all together.
I put my laptop on to see if there was anything I can do.  I was getting really inconsistent ping times to www.bbc.co.uk. ; On a single test, my results were between 30ms and 120ms.
I sat next to my router and ran a test on speedtest.net and got 0.6mb
I then connected via wire to router and got 6.5mb
I then disconnected wire and connected wirelessly and got 4.5mb
I then connected via wire to the router and got 6.3mb
I then ran a ping to bbc (wired) and got 3 "no results" and one at 644ms
I then re-ran the test and got 4 results within the range 23-26ms
So, in summary, I'm finding it really hard to get any kind of stable result.
As I see it, I have (at least) three problems:
First - my connection speed has been appalling for most of the week.  I have been unable to even browse on the internet.  I'm not trying to stream anything or do any downloads.  I just can't even open up a basic web-page.
Second - my ping times seem incredibly varied - even connected via a wired connection to my router I can get some abysmal results.
Third - my wireless network does not seem to be working very well.  I really don't understand this.  I have a brand new £80 router, a new microfilter, and I sit no more than 10ft from my router through one internal wall.
Is there anything else I can try to help any of these problems?  I'm so frustrated by this whole thing.  Cry
