Re: What should be done with the 2.5% VAT reduction - Poll

I preferred £sd.
The money in those days had a nice ring to their names; farthing (although I am too young to have actually spent it), ha'penny, tu'ppence, thru'ppence, sixpence (as opposed to six pence), shilling, 2 bob, 5 bob, half-crown,  crown, 10 bob, guinea - Things seemed cheaper, too lol Wink
I think my favourite coin was the thru'penny bit - don't make 'em like that anymore.

Re: What should be done with the 2.5% VAT reduction - Poll

I omitted the sovereign as it had (has) the same value as a pound Smiley
And let's not forget the florin.
Back then, 2/6 (two & six or two shillings and sixpence) seemed so much furrther away from a £ than 12.5p does today.
Funny thing, though, I still tend to say tu'pence, thru'pence, etc. wrong - but I like it Smiley

in the seventies the Dutch also had a florin and it was the same size and I think value as ours

    * Florin (English coin), a coin valued at six shillings, used only in 1344
    * Austro-Hungarian gulden, used from 1754 to 1892
    * South German gulden, used from 1754 to 1873
    * British two shilling coin, produced from 1849 to 1970 with its denomination inscribed variously one florin, two shllings, or with both denominations.
    * Florin (Australian coin), used from 1910 to 1966
    * Irish florin coin, a two-shilling coin produced from 1928 to 1968

Sorry to be pedantic (and I know I'm a bit late), but 2/6 is the same as half a crown, and 5 bob was the same as a crown  Roll_eyes
I'm old enough to have just learned to multiply £sd as it went out.  There's no way that could be done at GCSE!! Multiply the pennies, divide by 12, put down the remainder ............  Crazy

I know Wink Just wanted to point out the many ways we could say the same value. Today 25p is just that - boring 25p Smiley
