What have Open Reach done to me??

I have been monitoring my line performance ever since seeing two OR vans at a roadside box where my overhead line passes on its way to the exchange
My Belkin N Router gives me the following:-
Date      Time          Download Data Rate    Noise Ratio   Atten
                                            Kb                                    db               db
31 May   10.49                7616                                    7               40 )  Typical recent performance, Upload 448Kb 22db  22db always
02 June 10.56                6720                                    6               40 )
05 June 15.45                5184                                  16               40
09 June 13.44                4608                                  16               41
10 June 16.17                  544                                   32              47
11 June 16.52                5024                                   16              40
12 June 10.22                  160                                   24              47
12 June 16.25                4672                                   17             40
13 June 12.49                  160                                   22             46
13 June 15.43                4736                                  17              41
18 June 16.31                3776                                   22             43
19 June 17.31                4864                                   17             40
22 June 11.10                3552                                   22             42
23 June 14.32                  256                                   36             45
Does your monitoring of my line give any clue as to what is going on?.
My Router figures always agree with BT Wholesale reports, the BT Phone is quiet and 1707 agrees.
Need;less to say that any downloading is quite unpredictable.    Can't reach the BT Box in the roof, No changes to my system done.
Sorry about the shift of spacing in the headings, they are OK in what I typed and when I look at the modify thingy so, I seem not to be able to tidy it up in the post!
Thanks in advance!!

Re: What have Open Reach done to me??

Hi there,
When did you see the vans? I ask as you seem to have experienced multiple disconnections between 8am and 10am on a few different days:
<img src="http://community.plus.net/visualradius/generated/image14035375737451.png"/>
This has caused the line rate to drop right down to 135kbs.
If you're unable to attribute this to anything raising a fault would be wise: http://faults.plus.net
Otherwise let me know as we might need to monitor things before looking at an SNR reset, either way we just need to get to the bottom of the issue first.

Re: What have Open Reach done to me??

Cor, that was quick!!!!
The Tues to Thursday look likely but I cannot be sure. No-one was there on Sunday at about 1200 (on the way to Lunch!). Nor today when I passed at about11 am.
My concern was aroused because they had a little crane on site on one of the earlier days and it looked as though they were changing the whole job.
I will keep tabs for a few days to see if anything settles.

Re: What have Open Reach done to me??

Hi! Adam
I have kept an eye on the figures since my last post as promised. They do indicate that ting could be better.
Time      Down Rate Kb    Noise Margin db  Atten db
24 June 14  15.19          4928                    17                    40
27 June 14  17.17          4736                    18                    39
28 June 14  11.31          4896                    17                    40
30 June 14  10.46          5344                    14                    40
Upload unchanged.
BT Wholesale Test
30 June 14 16.50      Download Speed achieved 0.49 Mbps  Acceptable speeds 0.05 -0.5Mbps
                              Connection Rate  5.34Mbps Down-stream 0.45Mbps Up-stream
                              OP Profile 0.5Mbps.
It would seem that a profile needs a bit of a shove.
I have noticed that downloading things has not been as slow as it was earlier and I am surprised that the limit has not been raised.
Have a look at your monitor to see if the disconnections are still prevalent. I have not found any in practice but my use has not been very heavy due to other activities.
My diary suggests that the likely dates for the OR activity, reported earlier, was likely to be a week before your data, say Tues 10 -Thurs.12. Could this explain the apparent lack of connection shown before 1400 on the 13th?

Re: What have Open Reach done to me??

I've just had a chat with our suppliers and this should now be sorted.
Can you please restart your router for the change to take effect?

Re: What have Open Reach done to me??

Hi Chris.
Thanks for quick action, posting delay been due to shopping etc., Router just rebooted & it seems to have done some good.
Belkin figure:-
Time      Download Data Rate Kbps  Noise Margin db    Attenuation db .
16.26            4736                                17    a                      40
BT Wholesale figures:-
Time        Download Speed Mbps    Acceptable speed Mbps  DSL Connection Rate Mbps  Profile Mbps
16.20            3.78                                  0  -  7.15                            4.74                          5
It is about what I could accept. Do you think that any further improvement may occur as things settle?  I will keep an eye on things for a bit.
Read today that BT are hoping to up-grade our local exchanges to "super speed broadband" by the year end !  Probably the bit of damp (mostly overhead) string 2Km long from here to local exchange (Llechryd) will take the shine of that (if it happens).  On the other hand the OR activities at the nearest box that (halfway to the exchange) I have seen might just be something to do with the up-grade????Huh

Re: What have Open Reach done to me??

I've reset the SNR back down to 6db to try and improve the speeds quickly for you. My advice would be to allow the line 10 days or so to settle and see how we are from there.
I'm not sure regarding the upgrades, might be worth taking a look at http://www.superfast-openreach.co.uk/rural-broadband/ and having a look under the area that you live in for further details.

Re: What have Open Reach done to me??

Thanks again.
I will keep a 10 day note (or thereabouts). Today Belkin reports 7616Kbps at 7db which looks promising. It would be helpful if Adam could look for any blips in connection please.

Quite what happened between 10 & 11 July seems a bit odd, perhaps the end of the training period and DLM left to its own devices?
Any comments and advice?
Thanks.

Re: What have Open Reach done to me??

As much as I'd love to say that things are looking good, I can't 😕
I've had another look at your line, it's still dropping out. The reason it's dropping, is because the line is erroring heavily at times, so much that it's forcing your connection to drop out. I've attached a graph; the brown line shows the errors on your line and the blue line is your sync rate. You can see, as the errors shoot up, your sync rate drops, it really should be a steady blue line and the brown line, at worst should be flat (ish) along the bottom to show no errors.
Here's your connection graph:
<img src="http://community.plus.net/visualradius/generated/image14053276585305.png"/>
My advice would be to raise a fault and provide a link to this thread in the Fault Report so we can get this investigated and sorted for you.

Re: What have Open Reach done to me??

Thanks Chris.
You will have seen times that service was impeccable yet there was a batch of disconnections during thje early hours of today. Apart from the router nothing was in use here!!
10-11 July look typical which knocks my idea about that. and how about Saturday 12th which could not be bettered? I will raise a Fault Report (not done one before).

Re: What have Open Reach done to me??

It is all a bit odd, the fault could be dependent on weather conditions, you never know. you can raise a fault at http://faults.plus.net

Re: What have Open Reach done to me??

Hi Chris,
I have raised a Ticket and referred the team to this thread as requested. Today's figures were:-  Data Rate 7200Kbps  Noise Margin 9db. Everything normal. This is similar to the figures prior to 11 July. I found that the questions in the Troubleshooter were not aimed at my sort of trouble. Hopefully the Team will realise that my system has been overhauled from the Test Socket onwards (Anotherone spent  day here doing the business!) The disconnections look as though the likely source could well exist in the overhead line to the exchange and perhaps what OR has been up to. The fact that many have a occurred at times when the system (apart from the router which is on 24/7) is powered down in very unsociable hours.

Chris
Slight clarification added to #12. I though that I had this bit of text in the first place!! It could avoid comments about not switching routers off thatmight arise.
