Voyager 2100 - Solved - thanks :)

Would anyone using a Voyager 2100/2110 or even 2091 please do me a favour.
Can anyone access following sites whilst using the above Voyager routers.
http://www.arrse.co.uk/
http://www.kitz.uk.com/ (not mine)
Please state if you are using the PN platform/RIN etc.. and also which model router you are using.

[edited to change the title to solved]

Re: Voyager 2100/2100/2091 users - please test

I'm using a Voyager 2100 - several years old - never bothered to update the firmware (if its working don't mess with it).
PN platform.
I can get to both sites although I have just viewed their main pages.
You do not say why you want the test - can't you access them yourself?

Nope not using a 2100.
Although the kitz site is a relatively new one.. the arrse site is a well known issue that goes back a few years. (and is known to PN).

"The arrse issue" is even known by Voyager and was something they werent even able to resolve after a firmware update
(im currently using 2.18.01.17h_a023g1.d15g which was a beta version).
Voyager gave up trying to find the root cause because all their testing only showed it occuring on the Plusnet platform.  It also occurs on a couple of other ISP platforms - Supanet  and another ISP I cant recall.

My obvious first thought that it was an MTU issue - but no amount of tweaking my MTU settings seems to resolve this and I still cant access these sites. I can though if I use another router.
I was more trying to get to the bottom of the kitz one to see if it was another instance of the "arrse issue" (theres a few other known sites that are included in the list too).
The reason Im trying to get to the bottom of it - is that mail to the other domain "conveniently" seems to have gone astray too. Sad

hmmm  thanks for that info - may be on to something here!
FYI this is some of the relevent snippets of convo with Voyager that date back to 2006 when I was in contact with them about developing firmware which supported IGMP.
They also asked me to test some sites regarding the "arrse issue" - originally in Feb 06 I could access them, but soon after I couldnt. - The "soon after" was after I upgraded the firmware.
Like you my 2100 is now a couple of years old.. and did at first have the really old firmware version on.

In regards to PlusNet web page inaccessibility problems, we know that the problem lies with the 2100 / PlusNet combination as we have tested the a number of different PCs with a number of different Voyager routers and the only router that did not work on any PC was the Voyager 2100, all the PCs worked with all the other routers tested.  Thus far you are the only PlusNet customer that we have talked to that is able to access the problem pages;

There is definitely some sort of problem with the 2100/PlusNst combo
when it comes to some web pages but we haven't been able to figure out
what's different with PlusNet server setup and how it only effects the
2100.

Edit
I was just about to update the firmware to try that
alan - where did you get v 3.03c from - do you know please?
Ive just been to the voyager site and the latest version on there is still the  2.18.01.17 variant Sad

Alan - re my above post
I just noticed 3.03c firmware is available for download under the 2110 - do you definitely have a 2100?
I know the 2100/2110 are very similar and have in the past shared similar firmware....   I'm wondering if perhaps to give it a go.

Well, the kitz site (not yours) is hosted on MSWindows IIS (not the best webserver implementation) and it is quite possible that the path MTU discovery is not set up properly (black hole).  I get this when I try to open it in Opera (<p>This page uses frames, but your browser doesn't support them.</p>)
The military site seems OK, although there's sooo much in it generated by a busy CMS (http://dragonflycms.org) that some clients may not cope with it.
If I were to guess I would also argue that this is an MTU fragmentation issue.  Perhaps you need to sniff packets before and after the router to see what is being dropped?  Does the problem also occur if you switch off the firewall/ turn on ICMP responses?

my first thought - hence trying MTU tweaking.
Set MTU on the PC using DrTCP - and also within the router (btw the Voyagers have 2 different places to alter this - one on the LAN side and one on the WAN side - so you have to make sure you do both).
I can confirm ICMP is on.
Remote server responds for kitzleisure but not for arrse when doing a tracert  - which is why I find it strange that I cant get http responses via any browser (IE, FF + Opera)

MTU 1430 should be fine

Both sites will work ok if I put the ST on (which I think would eliminate it being a PC problem)
- but I like using the Voyager because of its wireless range for the laptop and media centre.

Re: Voyager 2100/2100/2091 users - please test

Sites seem fine with our 2100, firmware 2.18.01.17i_a023g1.d15g, Plusnet BB+.
But we have set it to an MTU of 1500, having had trouble with Macromedia/Adobe sites not loading when set to the factory default of 1400.

Don't know if this is useful but I can access both sites perfectly well using a Voyager 2091 router (version 3.03c) and using Firefox. No problems exiting either.  Smiley
