Thanks Jack. Openreach have been, replaced cable all the way from the pole down the road, said the problem was caused by knackered old cable and some 'tree rub' from over the road that damaged the line. Apparently all working OK and the tests suggest anything up to 20mb should now be supported. The engineer said he's reset whatever line speed restriction was in place from their end, bBut... our connection is still painfully slow unfortunately. Does something need to happen at the Plusnet end before our speed picks up?
