Very good connection has gone south

For more than a year my router has syncd in the high 7Ks kbps @  3 dB margin and 47 dB attenuation, However within the last six or so weeks I have been lucky to achieve 6000 kbps, what ever the target noise margin, but upstream sync is substantially higher than before. Noise margins for down and up streams used to be stronger on the up by say 3 dB.  Now the differential is much reduced to ~1 dB.

If and when a staff member is about , could he, please, have a look at me from the Plusnet end.

No one has to agree with my opinion, but in the time I have left a miracle would be nice.

Re: Very good connection has gone south

Sorry to hear you're having speed problems.

Testing your broadband service is showing it banded at 6 Mb/s...

Profile Info: WBC 3M - 6M Medium delay (INP 2) 6dB Downstream, UC Low delay (INP 0) 6dB Upstream (ADSL2+)

Likely caused by the historic drops in your connection...

Testing your line isn't identifying any problems. I've removed the banding now, and the sync speed has crept up to about 6.1 Mb/s which is unfortunately within your estimates.

If the drops continue we could possibly raise a fault based on that.

Let us know how you get on.

Re: Very good connection has gone south

@Gandalf Thank you. I think I did say in my OP that hitherto I had been working to a 3 dB noise margin. My Billion 8800Nl router does permit me to tweak the noise margin.

How long would you suggest I wait before gradually dropping the target down?

No one has to agree with my opinion, but in the time I have left a miracle would be nice.

Re: Very good connection has gone south

Perhaps leave it a few days and if the connection remains stable you could try dropping the noise margin down to 3db and then see how your connection fares.

Re: Very good connection has gone south

Please, can you have another look at my connection? Something is definitely awry from the time a few months ago, when could work on 3dB margin and approaching 8000kbps sync even interleaved. Now that’s impossible, but I’ve been put on fast path!

At around 6 p.m on 27 June, I got around to running router from test socket by wi-fi, the distance and situation between router and computer being long and problematic for Ethernet.

On seeing a rise in sync to 6700 from 5400 kbps, I thought my wiring is suspect, but within the hour it had dropped back to 5380. Then through 28th it was much the same with sync and SNRm fluctuations from high to -2 dB, though connection seemed to hold more or less, but with some drops.

Smileys below are a mystery!

Come this morning, it was hell on steroids getting a connection. This is the log from a monitoring application:

Re: Very good connection has gone south

Testing your line is showing lots of errored seconds on both upload and download.

Is there any noise on your phone line?

Re: Very good connection has gone south

I'll do a further noise test at the test socket, but I can't say I or my better hearing younger relatives have noticed when I've asked them to listen with either DECT or corded. As to the errors, I am aware that when I was trying to get on line and shortly after the errors/hour were in five figures. Looks like there were 3 resyncs just after midday, accompanied by massive down SNR drop.

Here's my monitor's event log. Please ignore fat finger items. Smiley

Re: Very good connection has gone south

Thanks @Luzern, if there's no noise on the line please report the fault over at http://faults.plus.net

We can certainly see it's dropping out and the errors are definitely higher than we'd expect, however we'd like to rule out phone problems potentially causing the errors first.

Re: Very good connection has gone south

I'm preparing faults questionnaire, but this

he Broadband light flashes when the connection drops
The Broadband light stays on when the connection drops

I can't recall that, so do I now have to wait for the next connection drop? For quite a few hours now drops have been rarer.

Re: Very good connection has gone south

Based on the router logs you've given it sounds like the broadband light is going off to so I'd go down that route.

Re: Very good connection has gone south

@MatthewWheeler I must have seemed stupid. I'll do as you recommend.

For whatever reason, from my monitir the errors seem lower today

Average error rates for 01 Jul 2017

CRC erors per hour: 77.2 Down, 12.1 Up
FEC erors per hour: 0 Down, 0 Up
HEC erors per hour: 108 Down, 23.0 Up
ES per hour: 12.0 Down, 6.87 Up
SES per hour: 3.40 Down, 0.06 Up

than yesterday

Average error rates for 30 Jun 2017

CRC erors per hour: 158 Down, 96.5 Up
FEC erors per hour: 0 Down, 0 Up
HEC erors per hour: 1094 Down, 274 Up
ES per hour: 26.6 Down, 23.8 Up
SES per hour: 2.34 Down, 1.00 Up

Are you seeing the same? Could it be just the weekend effect?

Re: Very good connection has gone south

Changing to old 582N, all seems OK, except I cannot see how to get to and use DCHP for my various devices. Can anyone advice, please?

Re: Very good connection has gone south

Not quite sure what you are asking for here - if its allocation of specific IP addresses via DHCP - try here http://192.168.1.254/cgi/b/devs/cfg/?be=0&l0=4&l1=0

Re: Very good connection has gone south

@Townman Thank you!

I seem to have a lot of junk from when relatives have visited, and some of our own. Some of it has unknown in the description.

From the initial characters of the MAC I can identify the vendor but not the particular item. How may I do that, please?

Once I have them identified is it possible to de-anonymize them in the list?

Re: Very good connection has gone south

I use Softperfect Network Scanner which allows me to assign a 'friendly name' to each device it finds on my network.

Initially I have to physically identify the MAC of each device by various means.

Edit: This software, which used to be free has now gone commercial.
